If you love theme parks but do not want the cost of a full holiday, a theme park Extreme Day Trip could be the perfect option.
An Extreme Day Trip (EDT) is where you fly out early in the morning and return home late the same day, giving you a full day abroad without paying for hotels.
Over the last few years we have done Extreme Day Trips across Europe ourselves, including Disneyland Paris and Tivoli Gardens, and one thing we have learned through our research is that not every theme park works well for a same day return.
Popular options include Disneyland Paris, Tivoli Gardens, PortAventura, Efteling and Europa-Park, with some same-day return flights available from under £40.
The best ones need:
- Early outbound flights
- Late evening returns
- Easy airport transfers
- Enough time inside the park to make the day worthwhile

That said, sometimes a 24-hour trip actually works better than a true same day return.
Parks like Disneyland Paris often have fireworks as late as 11pm during summer, and some larger parks simply deserve more time. In these cases, it can make more sense to fly out one day and return the next morning or evening instead.
These are some of the best theme park Extreme Day Trips we have found from the UK & Ireland.
Perfect if you're planning your first Extreme Day Trip.
Tivoli Gardens is one of the best theme park Extreme Day Trips in Europe.
The park is located right beside Copenhagen Central Station, making transfers incredibly easy.
From Copenhagen Airport:
- Take the M2 metro to Kongens Nytorv
- Change onto the M4 towards København Syd
- Get off at København H (Central Station)
The journey takes around 20–25 minutes and costs roughly 30 DKK (£3.50). Very quick and easy.
If you fancy this trip, take a look at how we spent 24 hours in Copenhagen, including a visit to Tivoli Gardens.
We have personally done Disneyland Paris as a same day return and it works surprisingly well if you choose the right flights.
From Charles de Gaulle Airport:
Take the TGV high-speed train directly to Marne-la-Vallée Chessy
The journey takes around 9 minutes. The train exits right at Disneyland Paris gates.
Same-day Return Flights regularly appear from:
- Luton
- Bristol
- Edinburgh
- Dublin
These flights can easily rise above £100pp, especially during school holidays, however bargains do still appear. We recently spotted Dublin flights from around £42 return in June.
This is also one of the destinations where a 24-hour trip can work better than a strict EDT, especially if you want to stay for the evening fireworks.
If you're looking for another theme park adventure, see how we turned Disneyland Paris into an Extreme Day Trip.
Parc Astérix is one of the best alternatives to Disneyland Paris for thrill ride fans.
The park is much closer to Charles de Gaulle Airport than many people realise, making it surprisingly realistic for an Extreme Day Trip.
How to get there from the airport
From Charles de Gaulle Airport:
Take the dedicated Parc Astérix shuttle bus from Terminal 3
The journey takes around 20 minutes.
Parc Astérix tends to be:
- Cheaper than Disneyland Paris
- Less crowded
- Better for bigger thrill rides
- More suited to older children and teens
You can often use the exact same flight routes that work for Disneyland Paris EDTs (see airport options above).
Gardaland is one of the best family theme parks in Italy and works really well alongside a Lake Garda day trip.
We personally chose to stay overnight for our own Lake Garda trip, however it could absolutely work as an EDT with the right flights.
How to get there from the airport
From Verona Airport:
- Take the airport shuttle bus to Verona Porta Nuova station
- Then take a train to Peschiera del Garda
- Gardaland shuttle buses run from the station
Personally, if I only had the day, I would hire a car or take a taxi from Verona airport (around 15km), to save time.
Flights regularly appear from:
- Gatwick
- Bristol
- Dublin
These routes can become expensive, however we often find the best EDT fares appear around 6–8 weeks before departure rather than months ahead.
We recently spotted June fares from Stansted for around £44 return.
Parque Warner Madrid is one of the best Extreme Day Trips for rollercoaster fans.
Madrid is slightly further than some other EDT destinations, but the flight options are often excellent and the weather is usually reliable outside winter.
How to get there from the airport
From Madrid Airport:
- Take the metro into central Madrid
- Then take the local train and park shuttle bus
The journey usually takes around 1 hour 15 minutes total.
Flights regularly appear from:
- Stansted
- Gatwick
- Dublin
- Edinburgh
We regularly see fares from around £45 return in June.
PortAventura World is probably one of the easiest theme park Extreme Day Trips from the UK.
The huge number of flights to Barcelona makes this one much more realistic than many people expect.
PortAventura is around 1–2 hours from Barcelona Airport depending on transport method.
How to get there from the airport
- Take the train into Barcelona Sants
- Then take the direct train to PortAventura
Flights regularly appear from:
- Stansted
- Bristol
- Gatwick
- Edinburgh
- Dublin
PortAventura and Ferrari Land sit side by side, making it easy to combine both parks if you want to squeeze even more into your day.
Efteling is one of the most unique theme parks in Europe.
It feels very different from Disney style parks and works especially well for families.
How to get there from the airport
From Eindhoven Airport:
- Take the airport bus to Eindhoven Station
- Then continue by train and local bus towards Kaatsheuvel.
Efteling is around 30 minutes by car from Eindhoven Airport, although public transport normally takes closer to 90 minutes–2 hours with connections.
We regularly see Eindhoven Extreme Day Trip fares from London Stansted from as low as £28 return.
Energylandia is becoming increasingly popular with UK thrill ride fans.
If you love rollercoasters, this is probably one of the best value theme park EDTs in Europe.
How to get there from the airport
From Kraków Airport:
- Take the train into Kraków Glowny
- Then take a train towards Zator
The journey usually takes around 1 hour 30 minutes.
EDT Flights regularly appear from:
- Bristol
- Gatwick
- Stansted
- Dublin
This is one of the strongest options for:
- Teens
- Older children
- Rollercoaster fans
- Budget travellers
Liseberg is one of the most underrated theme park Extreme Day Trips in Europe.
Scandinavia does not usually feel like a budget destination, which is why this one surprises so many people.
How to get there from the airport
From Gothenburg Landvetter Airport take the Flygbussarna airport coach directly into Gothenburg city centre
Liseberg is then easily reachable by tram or a short walk.
Same-day return flights regularly appear from London Stansted, with fares sometimes available from around £34 return in June.
Liseberg also works brilliantly during Christmas when the park transforms into one of Europe’s most festive theme park destinations.

Europa-Park is one of the best theme parks in Europe for thrill rides and immersive themed areas.
We originally considered including this much higher on the list, however realistic same-day return flight timings from the UK are much harder to find consistently compared to the other parks above.
How to get there from the airport
From Basel Airport:
- Take the airport shuttle bus into Basel
- Then continue by train and coach towards Rust
Basel would probably work better as a 24-hour trip than a true same-day return, although you can sometimes find EDT-style flight timings from London Gatwick.
If you are looking for Extreme Day Trip ideas, theme parks can be one of the most exciting ways to spend a day abroad.
Unlike a traditional city break, everything is centred around one experience, which means you can often maximise your time once you arrive.
Whether you prefer rollercoasters, family attractions or themed lands, there are plenty of theme park Extreme Day Trips that can work surprisingly well from UK airports. Popular options include Disneyland Paris, Tivoli Gardens, PortAventura, Efteling and Energylandia.
A theme park Extreme Day Trip can also make a really memorable birthday idea. Instead of presents or a traditional celebration, spending the day in another country can feel much more like an experience.
We actually did Disneyland Paris as a birthday Extreme Day Trip, and it ended up becoming one of our favourite trips. Flying out early in the morning and coming home late the same day made the whole experience feel a bit more special and adventurous.
If you are planning an Extreme Day Trip with children or teenagers, some destinations work much better than others. Parks with straightforward airport transfers, compact layouts and attractions for multiple age groups usually work best.
Disneyland Paris, Tivoli Gardens and Efteling are all good family-friendly options, while places such as Energylandia and Parque Warner Madrid may appeal more to older children and thrill ride fans.
Extreme Day Trips do not always need to be expensive. Some of the cheapest ideas often come from destinations with frequent flights and strong competition between airlines.
We regularly see same-day return fares from under £40–£50 on routes such as Copenhagen, Paris and Eindhoven, although prices can vary significantly depending on season and school holidays.
A few things we have learned from doing EDTs ourselves:
- Travelling with an under-seat bag usually works best.
- Aim for airports with fast transfers
- Always double check late evening return times
- Budget airlines can change schedules frequently. It's best to book your outbound and return flight with the same provider to entitle you to a full refund should one leg be moved or cancelled.
- We often find the best fares around 6–8 weeks before departure
- Sometimes a 24-hour trip works better than a same day return
- Not every destination works well all year round. Shuttle buses may only be for peak season.
-To maximise time, it is usually best to hire a car than to rely on public transport. Disneyland Paris is an exception to this though with the TGV taking 9 mins and a taxi around 50 mins.
We also always recommend having realistic expectations on what can be seen or done (or in this case ridden) in a day.
An Extreme Day Trip is a very long day, but if planned properly, they can also be one of the cheapest and most memorable ways to travel.
