If you're planning a trip to Switzerland, there's a good chance Grindelwald has already caught your attention.
Surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery and located in the heart of the Jungfrau Region, Grindelwald is one of Switzerland's most popular destinations.
But is Grindelwald actually worth visiting, or are places like Lauterbrunnen and Interlaken better choices?
After visiting Grindelwald during my trip to Switzerland, my answer is yes.
Grindelwald is absolutely worth visiting.
In fact, if you're looking for mountain scenery, I'd choose Grindelwald over Interlaken every time.
However, I also think it's worth being honest. While Grindelwald is beautiful, I wouldn't automatically choose it over Lauterbrunnen. Each destination offers something slightly different and the best choice depends on what you're looking for from your trip.

I've completed specialist Swiss public transport training and regularly update my knowledge with the Swiss Tourist Board, alongside exploring Switzerland myself.
Yes, Grindelwald is worth visiting.
The scenery is stunning, the village itself is attractive and there are plenty of activities nearby.
What I liked most was how alpine it felt. Unlike Interlaken, which acts as a larger transport hub, Grindelwald feels much more like the traditional Swiss mountain village many people imagine when planning a trip to Switzerland.
The views are spectacular, trains are easy to use and there is enough accommodation, restaurants and activities to keep visitors busy for several days.
Grindelwald is a mountain village in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland.
It sits beneath the famous Eiger and is surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the country.
Despite its popularity, Grindelwald is larger than many visitors expect.
The village has:
The railway station sits in the centre of the village, making it easy to arrive by train and explore on foot.
Unlike nearby Wengen, Grindelwald is accessible by both train and road.
While it has become a popular tourist destination, it still retains a genuine mountain village atmosphere.
This is the biggest reason to visit.
Where Interlaken is surrounded by scenery, Grindelwald feels immersed within it.
Towering mountains dominate the landscape and the views begin the moment you arrive.
Even simply walking through the village provides spectacular views in almost every direction.
If you're visiting Switzerland for mountain scenery, Grindelwald delivers exactly what most people hope Switzerland will look like.
I enjoyed staying in Interlaken, but the two places offer very different experiences.
Interlaken feels practical.
Grindelwald feels alpine.
Interlaken has more shops, restaurants and transport connections, but Grindelwald feels much more connected to the mountains.
If scenery is your main priority, I'd choose Grindelwald over Interlaken.
One thing that surprised me about Grindelwald was how much there is to do nearby.
Popular attractions include:
- Grindelwald First
- Bachalpsee
- Glacier Canyon
- Pfingstegg
- Kleine Scheidegg
- Jungfraujoch
Whether you're interested in hiking, mountain views, family attractions or simply relaxing in a scenic setting, there are enough activities to fill several days.
Like much of Switzerland, Grindelwald is incredibly easy to visit using public transport.
The train station sits right in the centre of the village and services run regularly throughout the day.
I travelled around Switzerland entirely by train and found Grindelwald straightforward to reach and explore.
For first-time visitors, this makes planning much easier.
One thing I'd strongly recommend is checking the weather before spending money on mountain excursions.
When I visited Grindelwald, I had originally planned to go up to Grindelwald First.
However, after checking the live webcam and weather forecast, visibility was almost zero.
Tickets aren't cheap and I didn't think it was worth spending the money just to sit inside a cloud.
Instead, I changed plans and visited Glacier Canyon.
While I'd still like to visit Grindelwald First on a future trip, I don't regret making that decision.
The live webcam made it easy to see exactly what conditions were like before committing to the cost.
This depends on what you're looking for.
If I was choosing purely based on scenery, I'd choose Grindelwald.
If I wanted one base for exploring several destinations, I'd probably choose Interlaken.
No, I wouldn't describe Grindelwald as a tourist trap.
It's certainly popular and it can be expensive, but the scenery is genuine and the attractions deliver exactly what they promise.
Places become touristy for a reason and Grindelwald's popularity is easy to understand once you arrive.
The mountain views are real, the village is attractive and the surrounding attractions are genuinely impressive.
Yes.
Families will find plenty to do in and around Grindelwald.
Popular attractions include:
The village is also easy to navigate and public transport connections are excellent.
After visiting all three, I think they each serve a different purpose.
Interlaken
Best for:
Lauterbrunnen
Best for:
Grindelwald
Best for:
If I could only choose one based purely on scenery, I'd probably choose Lauterbrunnen.
If Lauterbrunnen didn't exist, I'd choose Grindelwald over Interlaken.
Yes.
In fact, if I return to the Jungfrau Region, Grindelwald is one of the places I'd seriously consider staying.
I enjoyed Interlaken as a base, but Grindelwald offers a stronger sense of being in the mountains.
For visitors looking for scenery, atmosphere and easy access to mountain attractions, it would be an excellent choice.
Yes, Grindelwald is absolutely worth visiting.
The scenery is stunning, the village is attractive and there is plenty to do both in the village and surrounding mountains.
For scenery, yes.
That's a much tougher decision.
For me, Lauterbrunnen still edges it for sheer wow factor.
However, Grindelwald offers a fantastic balance between dramatic scenery, practical facilities and access to some of Switzerland's most famous attractions.
If you're planning a trip to the Jungfrau Region, I think Grindelwald deserves a place on your itinerary.
