Salzburg is home to one of Europe's oldest and most beautiful Christmas markets, the famous Salzburg Christkindlmarkt, held beneath the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress.
The city feels incredibly festive in December, with traditional wooden market stalls, twinkling lights, live music and the scent of mulled wine filling the historic streets.
It's also the perfect base for exploring the surrounding region, with Hallstatt easily reached by train and several Sound of Music filming locations nearby.

🚆 Take the train to Hallstatt.
From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, catch a train towards Hallstatt (usually changing once at Attnang-Puchheim). The journey takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes depending on the connection.
After arriving at Hallstatt station, take the short ferry across the lake into the village. The ferry is timed to meet arriving trains and takes around 10 minutes.
Spend the day exploring one of Austria's most picturesque villages before returning to Salzburg in the evening.
