1. Alcotraz Manchester – Immersive Prison Cocktail Experience

OUR EXPERIENCE | SOMETHING UNUSUAL | FROM £59PP

If you're looking for something completely different for date night, Alcotraz Manchester is one experience I would highly recommend.

We've done this ourselves and had an absolutely brilliant time. It's one of those activities where you go in not quite knowing what to expect, but quickly find yourself completely immersed in the experience.

The idea is that you're entering a secret prison-themed cocktail bar, where actors play the wardens, guards and inmates.

You're given orange prison jumpsuits to wear, and the whole venue is designed to look like a prison.

But the real fun begins when you get involved with the storyline.

How Does Alcotraz Manchester Work?

One of the unusual things about Alcotraz is that you bring your own alcohol.

We took vodka, which the mixologists then used to create cocktails for us throughout the experience.

You're encouraged to try to smuggle your alcohol past the prison warden, although there are ways to get it inside even if you're not quite confident enough to play along with that part!

Once inside, the actors bring the whole experience to life.

It's genuinely funny, with lots of opportunities to get involved in the storyline if you want to.

Equally, if you'd rather sit back and watch everyone else getting into trouble, that's absolutely fine too.

Is Alcotraz Worth the Money?

Tickets are advertised from around £59 per person, so it's definitely not the cheapest Manchester date night.

However, I think it's worth looking at what you're actually getting.

The experience lasts approximately 105 minutes and normally includes three to four cocktails made using the alcohol you bring.

We actually remember having around five drinks each during our visit.

And considering how much cocktails can cost on a night out in Manchester, the price doesn't seem quite as expensive once you factor in the entertainment as well.

Of course, you do need to purchase your own alcohol separately, so it's worth including that in your budget.

For us, it was absolutely worth it. We laughed so much and thought the actors were fantastic.

Our Verdict: Highly Recommended

Alcotraz is one of the most memorable date experiences we've done in Manchester. It's immersive, funny and completely different from a normal night at a cocktail bar.

Price: From approximately £59 per person.

Duration: Around 105 minutes.

Location: Great Northern, Watson Street, Manchester.

Remember to bring unopened, sealed alcohol as instructed by the venue. It's an adults-only experience.

2. The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience Manchester

OUR EXPERIENCE | BEST FOR FUN | FROM £44PP

If you grew up watching The Crystal Maze on television, The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience Manchester is something you absolutely need to try.

I was completely obsessed with the programme when I was younger and always dreamed of going on it.

So when I discovered there was a real-life Crystal Maze experience in Manchester, I knew we had to give it a go.

And honestly, it didn't disappoint.

It was incredibly similar to the television show, with the same excitement, pressure and brilliant themed environments.

Our date night at The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience Manchester
Our Crystal Maze experience in Manchester.

What Happens at The Crystal Maze?

Just like the TV programme, you work your way through four themed zones:

  • Aztec
  • Medieval
  • Industrial
  • Futuristic

Each zone has different games and challenges involving physical skills, puzzles, logic and teamwork.

You'll be accompanied by a Maze Master who guides everyone through the experience and really helps bring the whole thing to life.

As you complete challenges, you collect crystals.

The more crystals your team wins, the more time you receive in the Crystal Dome at the end.

And yes, the Crystal Dome is just as much fun as you'd imagine!

Can You Do The Crystal Maze as a Couple?

Absolutely!

One thing you might be wondering is whether it's suitable if there are only two of you.

Don't worry about that at all.

We attended as a couple and were added to a larger team with other visitors.

Everyone got involved, and we all had a fantastic time together.

In fact, being part of a team is a big part of the fun.

It doesn't matter whether you're naturally competitive or just want to enjoy the experience.

You'll find yourself cheering everyone on and getting completely caught up in the challenges.

It really did feel like stepping into the television programme.
Our Verdict: We'd Do It Again!

This is another Manchester experience we would happily repeat.

It was exactly how I remembered the show, and getting to take part in the challenges was brilliant.

Price: From approximately £44 per person.

Duration: Around 75 minutes.

Location: Lower Byrom Street, Manchester.

Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as you'll be moving around throughout the experience.

3. Manchester Food Walking Tour

OUR EXPERIENCE | BEST FOR FOOD LOVERS | FROM £90PP

If you both enjoy food, the Manchester Food Walking Tour is another experience I would definitely recommend.

We joined a guided food walking tour through Ancoats and the Northern Quarter, discovering independent restaurants, food businesses and places we probably wouldn't have found ourselves.

And there was so much more food than we expected!

In fact, by the third stop, we were already absolutely stuffed.

One of the things I loved most was that the experience wasn't simply about eating.

Our guide explained how Manchester's history, immigration and different communities have influenced the city's food scene over the years.

It was genuinely insightful, and we learned so much about the city while discovering some brilliant hidden gems.

What Food Did We Try?

We sampled a fantastic selection of different foods during our tour.

These included curry and rice, Caribbean soup, pizza, ice cream and a lovely artisan sharing board with cheeses and meats.

It was such a varied experience, with plenty of opportunities to try something different.

We also discovered some lovely smaller food businesses tucked away around the Northern Quarter.

That was probably my favourite part of the experience.

It's easy to visit Manchester and end up eating in the same familiar places, but this tour introduced us to somewhere completely different.

Is the Manchester Food Tour Worth It?

This is certainly a more expensive date idea, with the tour advertised from around £90 per person.

However, you're getting a guided experience lasting approximately three and a half hours, with food and drink tastings included.

We ate so much that we definitely didn't need another meal afterwards!

It's also a great way to get to know Manchester beyond the main shopping streets and tourist attractions.

Our tour introduced us to independent businesses and gave us a much better understanding of how Manchester has developed over the years.

Our Verdict: Brilliant for Food Lovers

We thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The food was fantastic, the history was fascinating, and we discovered places we'd never have thought to visit.

Price: From approximately £90 per person.

Duration: Around 3.5 hours.

Area: Ancoats and Northern Quarter.

This is more of a daytime or afternoon date, but you could easily combine it with an evening activity.

4. Go to a Concert Together in Manchester

OUR EXPERIENCE | MUSIC LOVERS

Manchester has one of the best music scenes in the country, and we've been to so many concerts here over the years.

If you both love music, there's really nothing better than booking tickets to see one of your favourite artists together.

Manchester has an incredible selection of music venues, ranging from huge arenas and stadiums to smaller, more intimate spaces.

Some of the best-known venues include:

  • Co-op Live
  • AO Arena
  • Etihad Stadium for selected major concerts
  • O2 Apollo Manchester
  • Manchester Academy
  • Albert Hall
  • Band on the Wall
  • O2 Ritz Manchester

We've enjoyed some brilliant concerts in Manchester over the years, including Liam Gallagher.

For a special occasion, concert tickets make a fantastic date night.

But you don't necessarily need to spend hundreds of pounds on a major artist.

Manchester also has smaller gigs, tribute acts and independent music venues where you can often find more affordable tickets.

Our tip: Check what's on before planning a Manchester night away. You might find a gig you both love and build your date around it.

5. See a West End Touring Show at the Palace Theatre

ROMANTIC DATE | SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Another lovely date idea is booking tickets for a theatre performance.

Manchester regularly welcomes touring West End productions, musicals, comedy performances and other live shows.

The Palace Theatre is one of the main venues for large touring productions, while Manchester Opera House is another excellent option.

We've enjoyed theatre trips to Manchester, and it's a great way to make an evening feel a little more special.

You can book dinner beforehand or simply enjoy a drink before the performance.

We're also going to see Home Alone in Concert at The Bridgewater Hall in December 2026, where the film will be shown with its soundtrack performed live by an orchestra and choir.

It's another example of the variety of performances you can find in Manchester beyond traditional musicals.

Budget tip: Check different performance dates and seating sections. Midweek shows and less central seats can sometimes offer better value.

6. Take on The Cube at Urban Playground

COMPETITIVE DATE | FROM £38PP

If you enjoy television game shows, another unusual Manchester date idea is The Cube Urban Playground.

Located in the Manchester Arndale Centre, this experience is based on the popular television programme.

You'll take on seven different challenges designed to test your physical ability, concentration, coordination and problem-solving skills.

The games take place inside individual Cube-style challenges, where you'll compete to score points and avoid losing lives.

It's a great option for couples who enjoy a little friendly competition.

Tickets are available in pairs, so it's possible to book for just two people, although the games themselves can involve groups of four.

It's ideal if you want an indoor activity before heading out for food or drinks.

7. Play Life-Sized PAC-MAN in Manchester

UNUSUAL DATE | FROM £28PP

If you're looking for something completely different, how about stepping inside a life-sized PAC-MAN experience?

At Arcade Arena Manchester, the classic arcade game has been transformed into an interactive experience where you're actually part of the action.

Instead of controlling PAC-MAN on a screen, you'll move around a giant maze, collecting points and trying to avoid the ghosts.

It's a fun idea for couples who grew up playing the original game or anyone who enjoys interactive experiences.

Tickets are advertised from around £28 per person.

You'll need to be prepared to move around quite a bit, so comfortable clothes and shoes are a sensible choice.

It's an indoor activity, making it a good option for rainy Manchester days.

8. Play Crazy Golf at Junkyard Golf Club

BUDGET-FRIENDLY | FROM £10PP

If you're looking for a relatively cheap Manchester date night, Junkyard Golf Club is a great option.

Located at First Street, this isn't your traditional mini-golf course.

Instead, you'll find unusual themed courses filled with quirky obstacles, neon lighting and plenty of opportunities for a laugh.

There are three different courses to choose from, each with its own theme.

You can book nine holes on one course or eighteen holes across two courses.

With tickets advertised from approximately £10 per person, it's one of the more affordable paid experiences on this list.

There are also bars around the venue if you'd like to enjoy a cocktail while playing.

Our tip: If you want to make a full evening of it, combine your game with food at one of the restaurants around First Street.

9. Enjoy a Night at a Manchester Comedy Club

FUN DATE | EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

For a date night filled with laughter, why not book tickets to a comedy club?

Manchester has a great comedy scene, with everything from established touring comedians to smaller stand-up nights.

The Frog and Bucket Comedy Club is one of the city's best-known comedy venues.

Located in the Northern Quarter area, it hosts a variety of stand-up comedy events throughout the week.

A comedy night is ideal if you're looking for something fun and relaxed without having to plan lots of separate activities.

You can enjoy the show and then head somewhere nearby for drinks afterwards.

Keep an eye out for their Beat the Frog comedy competition evenings, which can be a more affordable alternative to seeing a headline comedian.

Check the current programme and ticket prices before visiting.

10. Experience a Candlelight Concert

ROMANTIC DATE | MUSIC LOVERS

For a more romantic date night, consider booking a Candlelight concert in Manchester.

These performances take place in atmospheric venues illuminated by hundreds of LED candles.

Depending on the programme, you might hear classical compositions, film soundtracks or music inspired by well-known contemporary artists.

It's a lovely alternative to a traditional concert, particularly if you want something a little more intimate.

The performances and venues change throughout the year, so it's worth checking what's available for your chosen date.

For anniversaries, birthdays or a romantic evening together, this could be a particularly nice choice.

11. Go Out for a Foodie Date in Manchester

CLASSIC DATE | ALL BUDGETS

Sometimes there's nothing wrong with a traditional dinner date, especially in a city with as much choice as Manchester.

Whether you fancy a casual burger, sharing dishes or something a little more special, you'll find plenty of restaurants across the city.

We've enjoyed lots of meals in Manchester over the years, including a visit to Red's True Barbecue.

Barbecue food from a date night at Red's True Barbecue Manchester
One of our Manchester date night meals at Red's True Barbecue.

If you're planning a food-focused date, I'd consider one of these areas:

  • Northern Quarter: Independent eateries, casual dining and interesting bars.
  • Ancoats: Excellent independent restaurants and neighbourhood dining.
  • Spinningfields: Smart restaurants and cocktail bars for special occasions.
  • Chinatown: A fantastic choice for Asian restaurants and relaxed dining.
  • First Street: Convenient for food followed by the cinema or crazy golf.

For a budget-friendly date, consider a food hall where you can choose dishes from different vendors rather than committing to a more expensive sit-down restaurant.

12. Discover a Hidden Cocktail Bar

ROMANTIC DATE | DRINKS

Manchester has some fantastic cocktail bars, including a few with unusual concepts and hidden entrances.

If you're looking for a date night that feels a little different, consider somewhere like The Washhouse.

This Manchester bar is known for its secretive, laundrette-inspired entrance and atmospheric cocktail experience.

Another option is Speak in Code, which is particularly appealing if you enjoy creative cocktails.

For something more traditional, you could also look at Schofield's Bar.

It's worth booking in advance where possible, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Budget tip: You don't need to spend the whole evening in an expensive cocktail bar. Enjoy one drink somewhere special before moving on to a more affordable restaurant or activity.

13. Play Retro Arcade Games at NQ64

FUN DATE | GAMING

For a fun and informal date, head to NQ64 in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

This retro arcade bar combines classic games, neon lighting and gaming-themed cocktails.

It's ideal for couples who grew up playing arcade games or enjoy a bit of friendly competition.

You'll find a selection of retro gaming experiences, including arcade machines and classic consoles.

It's also a good option for a first date because you have something to do together rather than spending the entire evening sitting at a table.

Good to know: Check the venue's age restrictions and gaming token arrangements before visiting.

14. Try Social Darts at Flight Club

COMPETITIVE DATE | DRINKS AND GAMES

If you enjoy games but fancy something different from crazy golf or arcade machines, Flight Club Manchester offers a modern take on darts.

Located on King Street, Flight Club combines interactive dart games with food and drinks in a lively setting.

The automated scoring and different games make it accessible even if you aren't particularly good at darts.

It's a fun experience for competitive couples, although you'll need to check booking options for two people.

Some sessions and packages are more suitable for groups.

15. Work Together in an Escape Room

INDOOR DATE | PUZZLE LOVERS

Escape rooms are a brilliant option if you both enjoy puzzles, mysteries and working together.

You'll usually have a set amount of time to solve clues, unlock puzzles and complete a themed challenge.

Manchester has several escape room venues, including Breakout Manchester and Escape Hunt.

Some rooms are designed specifically for smaller groups, while others work better with more people.

I'd recommend checking the minimum group size before booking as a couple.

For a date that's a little more interactive than dinner and drinks, it's a great choice.

16. Compete at The Big Manchester Bake

FOOD LOVERS | SOMETHING DIFFERENT

If you both enjoy baking, why not try a Bake Off-inspired experience together?

The Big Manchester Bake offers baking challenges where participants compete to create their own bakes against the clock.

It's a fun idea for couples who like cooking together but fancy turning it into a friendly competition.

You get an activity, a chance to learn something new and potentially something tasty to enjoy afterwards.

Check current sessions, prices and booking arrangements before visiting.

17. Challenge Each Other at Boom Battle Bar

FUN DATE | GROUP ACTIVITIES

Boom Battle Bar is another option for couples who prefer activity-based dates.

Depending on the current venue offering, you can find competitive activities such as shuffleboard, axe throwing and other social games.

It's a good alternative if you've already tried traditional crazy golf and want something different.

Some activities may have minimum group sizes or specific safety requirements, so check which experiences can be booked for two people.

18. Enjoy a Magic Show Together

UNUSUAL DATE | LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

For something different from a comedy club or theatre performance, consider a close-up magic show.

Manchester has hosted intimate magic experiences where performers combine sleight of hand, comedy and audience interaction.

One option worth checking is The Unseen Room, which offers a more intimate entertainment experience than a traditional theatre production.

This type of date works particularly well for special occasions or when you're looking for something a little unexpected.

Check the current programme and venue information before planning your evening.

19. Try Pottery Painting Together

CREATIVE DATE | RELAXED ACTIVITY

Not every date night needs to involve cocktails or competitive games.

If you fancy something more relaxed, pottery painting is a lovely activity to try together.

Choose a piece of pottery, spend some time decorating it and create something to remember your date by.

Space Studio Manchester is one option worth checking for creative sessions.

Pottery painting is particularly good if you want time to chat while doing an activity.

Some studios operate more daytime sessions than evening appointments, so check opening times and collection arrangements.

20. Enjoy Romantic Rooftop Drinks

ROMANTIC DATE | SPECIAL OCCASIONS

For a more traditional romantic date, head somewhere with views across Manchester's skyline.

20 Stories in Spinningfields is one of the best-known rooftop venues in the city.

You can book a meal or simply look at the available options for drinks.

It's particularly appealing around sunset, when the city starts lighting up for the evening.

Budget-Friendly Romantic Date Idea

Instead of booking an expensive three-course meal, enjoy dinner somewhere affordable and then head to a rooftop bar for one drink.

You still get the special atmosphere and city views without spending quite as much.

21. Have a Cinema Date in Manchester

RELAXED DATE | RAINY DAY

A cinema date might be a classic choice, but Manchester has plenty of options beyond your usual local multiplex.

HOME Manchester is particularly good if you enjoy independent films, international cinema and a more relaxed arts venue.

It's also conveniently located at First Street, so you can easily combine your film with dinner or drinks.

Alternatively, look at the cinema options at Printworks or the Trafford Centre if you'd prefer a bigger cinema complex.

For a cheaper evening, check for off-peak tickets, midweek screenings and any available membership discounts.

22. Visit Manchester Christmas Markets Together

SEASONAL DATE | FREE TO EXPLORE

If you're planning a Manchester date during November or December, the Christmas markets are a lovely option.

Manchester's city centre is transformed with festive stalls, seasonal food, decorations and Christmas lights.

You don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy the atmosphere.

Simply wandering between the market areas, enjoying the decorations and stopping for a festive treat can make a lovely date.

Manchester Christmas Markets decorated for the festive season
Manchester Christmas Markets are a lovely seasonal date idea.

For a budget-friendly evening, set yourself a spending limit for food and drinks rather than buying something at every stall.

And if you're planning to visit on a weekend, expect the busiest areas to get quite crowded.

Our tip: If possible, visit during the week or earlier in the evening for a more relaxed experience.

23. Explore Manchester's Northern Quarter

FREE DATE | STREET ART AND INDEPENDENT SHOPS

One of my favourite areas of Manchester to explore is the Northern Quarter.

It's full of independent shops, quirky bars, street art and interesting places to eat.

And you don't need to spend much money to enjoy it.

Take a walk around the neighbourhood, look out for colourful murals and discover some of the smaller streets away from the busiest shopping areas.

The Northern Quarter is also home to plenty of independent cafés, bars and food businesses, so you can easily stop somewhere affordable if you fancy something to eat.

It's a particularly good option for an informal daytime date or a relaxed walk before an evening activity.

24. Explore Manchester Chinatown

BUDGET-FRIENDLY | FOOD AND SIGHTSEEING

Manchester's Chinatown is another lovely area to explore together.

Located close to the city centre, it's known for its impressive decorative archway and selection of Asian restaurants, bakeries and shops.

The traditional decorative archway at Manchester Chinatown

You could simply enjoy a walk around the area or combine it with a meal at one of the many restaurants.

If you're looking for a cheap date, consider picking up a few treats from one of the local bakeries rather than booking a full restaurant meal.

It's also conveniently located for exploring other parts of the city centre.

25. Plan a Date at the Trafford Centre

RAINY DAY | EVERYTHING UNDER ONE ROOF

If the weather isn't looking great, the Trafford Centre is a convenient place for a date because there are so many options under one roof.

You can combine shopping, food, a cinema trip and other entertainment without travelling across Manchester between activities.

It's particularly useful if you haven't decided exactly what you want to do beforehand.

Start with a walk around the shops, choose somewhere to eat and finish with a film or another activity.

There are options for different budgets, from grabbing something inexpensive to making a full evening of it.

Our tip: If you're driving, the Trafford Centre is a convenient alternative to navigating Manchester city centre, although it's worth allowing extra time during busy weekends and Christmas shopping periods.

More Free Things to Do Together in Manchester

For a relaxed daytime date, you could also explore some of Manchester's free museums and galleries.

Options worth checking include:

  • Manchester Art Gallery
  • The Manchester Museum
  • Science and Industry Museum
  • John Rylands Library
  • Castlefield's canals and historic streets

Some venues may charge for special exhibitions or experiences, but their general collections or public areas can be free to visit.

These are particularly useful if you want to plan a full day together before heading out in the evening.

Our Favourite Manchester Date Ideas

Having enjoyed quite a few different experiences in Manchester, there are three that particularly stand out for us.

Alcotraz was probably one of the most unusual date nights we've done. The actors were fantastic, the cocktails were lovely and we spent most of the experience laughing.

The Crystal Maze was another highlight, especially because I had always wanted to take part in the television show as a child. It really was just like I remembered, and I'd happily do it again.

And for something completely different, the Manchester food walking tour was brilliant. We discovered so many hidden gems and learned a lot about the city at the same time.

All three were memorable for different reasons, which is exactly what I look for when planning a date or a special day out.
