If you’re already planning ahead for Christmas 2026, this is one of the best early bird market-hopping routes you can book.
All flights land into Basel–Freiburg–Mulhouse Airport, which sits right on the border of Switzerland and France – you can literally choose which country you exit into. That makes it the perfect base for exploring France, Switzerland and Germany by train.
We’ve chosen two budget accommodation options in the best locations, so you can decide where to base yourself. Feel free to change these if you can afford a higher class of hotel. These price finds are just for ideas.
Colmar – right in the heart of the Alsace Christmas markets
Basel – excellent transport links, easy airport access and free public transport when staying in the city
Personally, I’ve stayed in Basel and love it as a base. The main train station connects easily to multiple Christmas market cities, and the airport is only 10 minutes from Basel city centre. If you stay in Basel, the airport bus is free, as you receive a local transport card.
