Looking for a magical Christmas market break without spending a fortune?

Instead of flying directly to France, why not fly to Basel, Switzerland?

Not only are flights often cheaper, but Basel makes an excellent base for exploring the Alsace region, with Colmar and the fairy-tale village of Riquewihr both easily accessible by public transport.

We've paired together return flights this December, with a two-night stay at B&B Hotel Basel to create an easy DIY Christmas market break from just £198pp.

Why Stay in Basel?

Many visitors automatically choose to stay in Colmar.

We actually think Basel makes the better base.

Flights are often cheaper, you'll receive a BaselCard with your hotel giving you free public transport within the city, and Basel's award-winning Christmas markets are well worth exploring in their own right.

Best of all, Colmar is less than an hour away by direct train, making it easy to enjoy one of France's most magical Christmas markets before returning to Basel for the evening

If I Had 48 Hours, This Is Exactly How I'd Spend Them...

🎄 Day 1

✈️ Fly to Basel.

🚌 Make your way to your hotel before heading into the city to explore Basel Christmas Market, one of Europe's most beautiful festive markets (flight time arrival dependent)

Enjoy dinner, festive lights and mulled wine before returning to your hotel.

🎄 Day 2

🚆 Catch the train to Colmar, one of France's most magical Christmas market destinations.

Spend the day wandering the colourful streets, exploring the six Christmas markets and sampling Alsatian festive food.

If time allows, continue to nearby Riquewihr, one of the prettiest villages in the Alsace region the fairy-tale village said to have inspired Disney's Beauty and the Beast, before returning to Basel for your final evening.

🎄 Day 3

🥐 Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before making your way back towards Basel EuroAirport for your lunchtime flight home.

If I had a later flight home, I'd spend a few more hours exploring Basel's Christmas markets or take a quick trip across the border to Freiburg in Germany before heading back to the airport.
