Can you really visit one of Switzerland's most famous Christmas markets and still sleep in your own bed that night?
After doing exactly that, my answer is yes.
In December, we flew from Liverpool to Geneva, caught a train to Montreux, spent the afternoon exploring Montreux Noël Christmas Market and were back home just after midnight.
What surprised me most wasn't how easy the journey was. It was how much I loved Montreux winter.
Set on the shores of Lake Geneva and surrounded by mountains, Montreux Noël feels completely different from many of Europe's city-based Christmas markets. Add in Flying Santa, lakeside chalets, festive food and mountain scenery, and it's easy to see why it's considered one of Switzerland's best Christmas markets.
Whether you're planning an overnight stay, a weekend break or an extreme day trip like we did, here's everything you need to know.

I've completed specialist Swiss public transport training and regularly update my knowledge with the Swiss Tourist Board, alongside exploring Switzerland myself.
Montreux Noël is the town's annual Christmas market, running along the shores of Lake Geneva from late November until Christmas Eve.
Unlike many Christmas markets that are centred around a historic square, Montreux Noël stretches along the lakeside promenade for over a kilometre, creating one of the most scenic Christmas market settings in Europe.
As you wander between the wooden chalets, you'll have views across Lake Geneva, snow-capped mountains in the distance and festive lights reflected on the water.
It's this setting that makes Montreux stand out from other Christmas markets I've visited.
There are plenty of Christmas markets in Europe, but Montreux offers something a little different.
Highlights include:
For me, it's one of the most beautiful Christmas market settings I've visited.
We visited Montreux Noël as an extreme day trip from Liverpool.
For context, we live around two hours from Liverpool Airport, so this really was a long day.
2:30am – Left home
5:00am – Arrived at Liverpool Airport
7:00am – Flight departed
9:30am (local time) – Landed in Geneva
10:55am – Direct train from Geneva Airport to Montreux
12:10pm – Arrived in Montreux
12:15pm – Reached the Christmas Market
12:15pm–5:00pm – Exploring Montreux Noël
5:00pm – Watched Flying Santa
5:49pm – Train back to Geneva Airport
8:55pm – Flight home
12:15am – Home and in bed
Absolutely.
I was slightly concerned that we'd spend most of the day travelling, but once we arrived in Montreux I quickly realised we'd have plenty of time to explore.
Five hours was enough to wander through the market, enjoy lunch, browse the stalls, walk along the lake and watch Flying Santa.
Would I recommend it to everyone?
Probably not.
But if you're used to extreme day trips and don't mind an early start, Montreux Noël is one of the most rewarding winter day trips I've done.
The easiest way to reach Montreux is via Geneva Airport.
After landing, simply follow the signs to the railway station located directly beneath the airport terminal.
From there, direct trains run regularly to Montreux.
Journey time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
The Christmas market is then just a few minutes' walk from Montreux station.

One of the first things I noticed was how relaxed everything felt.
Despite being one of Switzerland's most popular Christmas markets, it never felt overcrowded during our visit.
The combination of the lake, mountains and festive lighting creates a genuinely magical atmosphere.
The market stretches for over a kilometre along the waterfront.
You'll find traditional wooden chalets selling:
It's easy to spend several hours simply browsing.
As you'd expect in Switzerland, there is plenty of cheese.
Some of the food available included:
The cheese fondue baguette was one of my favourite things I tried during the visit.
The large Ferris wheel provides fantastic views across the market and Lake Geneva.
Tickets were around £8 per adult during our visit.
Flying Santa is undoubtedly Montreux Noël's most famous attraction.
Every evening, Santa appears in his sleigh and flies across the sky above Lake Geneva.
It's surprisingly impressive and one of those experiences that makes the market feel unique.
An additional 4:00pm flight is often added at weekends.
Tip- to get the best view of flying Santa, we stood on the ramp entrance of 'Chalet Fondue'. There is also another restaurant near the Freddie Mercury statue with a balcony.
We visited on Thursday 18th December, and it was surprisingly quiet.
I’d expect weekends to be busier, but midweek was calm, enjoyable and ideal for an extreme day trip.
One thing that surprised me was how relaxed the market felt, especially considering we visited just six days before Christmas.
Yes – but this is Switzerland.
All Christmas markets are pricey, but sticking to market food keeps costs manageable.
Here’s exactly what we paid:

💡 Tip:
You can buy a special Montreux Noël train ticket that includes:
In hindsight, we probably should have chosen this option, as it offers better value if you plan to eat and drink at the markets.
In terms of food and drink, I only spent around £30, then got something from Migro's at the airport for the way home. I also paid £8 to ride on the big wheel.
If you're looking to stay overnight, we would highly recommend staying at Mona Montreux. This hotel is within the Christmas Markets themselves and offers reasonably priced rooms.
One of Montreux Noël's most popular attractions is Santa's House at Rochers-de-Naye.
Visitors travel by cogwheel railway from Montreux station to the summit at over 2,000 metres above sea level.
At the top you'll find:
We chose not to do this on our extreme day trip because we wanted to maximise our time in Montreux itself, but it's definitely something I'd consider on a future visit.
If you're staying overnight, it's well worth looking into.
Montreux Noël typically runs from late November until Christmas Eve.
For 2026, the planned dates are:
20th November to 24th December 2026.
Most chalets open from late morning until around 10pm.
Always check official opening times before travelling.
Yes.
In fact, it's one of the Christmas markets I'd jump at the chance to re-visit.
The setting alone makes it worth the trip.
Many Christmas markets blur into one another after a while. Montreux feels different.
The combination of Lake Geneva, mountain scenery, Flying Santa and the relaxed atmosphere creates something genuinely memorable.
For me, yes.
Would I do it every weekend? No.
Would I get up at 2:30am again to visit Montreux Noël? Absolutely.
The direct flights, simple train journey and compact layout make it one of the easiest Christmas markets in Europe to visit as a same-day return trip from the UK.
If you're looking for a festive adventure without using annual leave or paying for accommodation, Montreux Noël is a fantastic option.
