If you've found cheap flights to Oslo Torp and you're planning a trip to Tønsberg, getting there by public transport is actually really easy.
We travelled from Oslo Torp Airport to Tønsberg and used the airport shuttle bus followed by the train.
Before we arrived, I'd looked at the journey online, but I still wasn't completely sure how everything connected. Torp train station isn't actually at the airport, so I wasn't sure whether we'd have a long wait between the shuttle and train, how we'd buy tickets or even what the station would be like.
As it turned out, the whole thing was incredibly straightforward.
The shuttle bus is coordinated with the trains, Torp station is only around five minutes from the airport and the train journey from Torp to Tønsberg takes roughly 20 minutes.
In this guide, I'll show you exactly how we travelled from Oslo Torp Airport to Tønsberg, including where to buy your tickets, how to find the shuttle bus, which train you need and how to make the journey back to the airport.
I've also included the cost of taking a taxi instead, as we asked about this when we arrived.

The easiest way to get from Oslo Torp Airport to Tønsberg without a car is:
Oslo Torp Airport → Airport Shuttle → Torp Train Station → RE11 Train → Tønsberg
The shuttle journey takes around 5 minutes, followed by approximately 20 minutes on the train.
When we travelled in September 2026, trains ran roughly once per hour.
You don't need to travel into Oslo first. Tønsberg is actually in the opposite direction and is very easy to reach directly from Torp.
You can buy your train ticket before you even leave the airport.
There's a ticket machine inside Arrivals at Torp Airport where you can purchase tickets for the train from Torp station to Tønsberg.
Alternatively, you can buy your ticket through the Vy app or website.
Our one-way train ticket from Torp to Tønsberg cost 68 NOK per adult, which was around £5.41 per person at the time.
We found using public transport in Norway really easy, and having the Vy app on your phone is useful if you're going to be making more train journeys during your trip.
I'd always recommend checking your journey on Vy before travelling, as train times and prices can change.
Torp train station isn't directly outside the airport terminal, but getting there is really straightforward. There's a dedicated shuttle bus connecting the airport with the station, and the journey takes just five minutes.
You don't need to cross any roads or go looking for a separate bus stop. As you come through the main doors from Arrivals, the shuttle pulls up just to the right of the exit, on the same side of the road. Look for the bus with Vy Shuttle written across the side and you'll know you're in the right place.
When we travelled, the shuttle left the airport at around 30 minutes past the hour, giving us plenty of time to connect with the train to Tønsberg. We bought our tickets directly from the driver when we boarded and paid 45 NOK each, which was around £3.60 per person at the time of our trip.
We paid by card and, to my knowledge, the bus is card only, so I wouldn't rely on being able to pay with cash.
The shuttle and train times are coordinated too, so you don't need to worry about working out how much time to leave between the two.
I'd still recommend checking the latest timetable and fare before travelling, as both can change.
Yes, there's plenty.
The shuttle bus has huge luggage racks, so I wouldn't worry about travelling with suitcases.
We were travelling with hand luggage only, but there was far more luggage space than we needed.
The buses themselves are comfortable and the journey is so short that you're at the station before you know it.
This was probably the part of the journey I was most unsure about before we went, mainly because Torp isn't what you'd picture when you think of an airport train station.
It's basically a tiny one-track village station in the middle of nowhere, with no proper station entrance or multiple platforms to navigate. The shuttle pulls up right beside the station and you simply get off the bus and walk onto the platform, so there's no chance of getting lost or ending up on the wrong side of the tracks.
It might feel a little strange the first time you arrive, particularly as there's very little there, but don't worry, you're definitely in the right place.
One thing I was really impressed with was how well the shuttle and trains worked together. The shuttle basically runs on a continuous loop between Torp Airport and Torp train station, taking passengers from the airport to meet their train, then collecting passengers arriving by train and bringing them back to the airport.
When we arrived at Torp Airport, we'd literally just missed a train to Tønsberg and were about to get on the shuttle anyway. The driver told us not to bother, as we'd just end up standing at Torp station in the rain waiting for the next train. Instead, he told us to stay at the airport and catch him on his next loop.
We went back inside Arrivals, grabbed a drink and came back out for the next shuttle. The drivers were really helpful and clearly knew which trains passengers needed to connect with, so the whole system felt very well coordinated.
It's worth knowing this because there really isn't much at Torp station and very little shelter. If you've got a while before your train, there's no point heading over ridiculously early. You're much better waiting inside the airport and catching the shuttle that connects with your train.
From Torp station, you need the:
RE11 towards Eidsvoll
Tønsberg isn't the final destination of the train, so look for RE11 Eidsvoll on the departure board rather than expecting the train to simply say Tønsberg.
When we travelled in September 2026, the train left Torp at around 51 minutes past the hour, with roughly one service per hour.
Timetables can change, so don't rely on these exact times for your trip. Check Vy for the live timetable on your travel date.
The train journey takes roughly 20 minutes. It's so quick that there really isn't any need to overthink which class to book or whether you need to reserve a particular seat.
We travelled in standard second class and it was more than adequate. The trains are quite long and we had absolutely no problem finding seats.
Yes.
There was adequate luggage storage onboard the train, although we were only travelling with hand luggage ourselves.
Combined with the huge luggage racks on the airport shuttle, I wouldn't personally be concerned about doing this journey with luggage.
There were also vending machine facilities onboard our train if you wanted to grab a drink or snack.
Around 20 minutes after leaving Torp, you'll arrive at Tønsberg Station.
From here, you can walk into the centre of Tønsberg and down towards the harbour in around 10 minutes.
We stayed centrally and didn't need a car at any point during our trip.
When we travelled in September 2026, we paid:
Train from Torp to Tønsberg: 68 NOK per adult
Airport shuttle: 45 NOK per adult
That made our journey 113 NOK per person each way, or roughly £9 per person at the exchange rate when we travelled.
For two adults, we paid around £18 one way using the shuttle and train.
Prices can change, so use these as an example of what our journey cost rather than a guaranteed fare for your own trip.
Yes, and we actually asked about this when we arrived.
The journey from Torp Airport to Tønsberg takes around 25 minutes by road, so a taxi is obviously the quickest and most convenient option.
We were quoted a set fare of 930 NOK, which was approximately £74 one way, for a standard car carrying up to four people. If there are four of you splitting the cost, it might be an option worth considering, particularly if you'd rather go straight from the airport to your hotel.
I would check the vehicle size if you're travelling as a family of four with several full-sized suitcases though. The price we were quoted was for a standard car carrying four people and we were travelling with hand luggage only. Four passengers plus four large suitcases could potentially be a squeeze, so you may need a larger vehicle if you're travelling with lots of luggage.
For us, the shuttle and train were so straightforward, and considerably cheaper, that we didn't feel there was any need to pay the extra for a taxi.
Getting back to Torp Airport is basically the same journey in reverse.
From Tønsberg Station, you need the:
RE11 towards Skien
Again, don't look for a train with Torp as its final destination. Look for RE11 Skien on the departure boards.
When we travelled, trains from Tønsberg towards Torp left at around 52 minutes past the hour and the journey took roughly 20 minutes.
We bought our train ticket at Tønsberg station, although you can also buy it using the Vy app or website.
Once you arrive at Torp train station, the airport shuttle should be waiting to connect with the train.
We got off the train, walked across to the bus and paid for our shuttle ticket onboard.
The bus then took us straight back to the airport terminal in around five minutes.
It really couldn't have been much easier.
Getting from Torp Airport to Tønsberg using public transport was incredibly straightforward. The only part I was slightly unsure about before our trip was the fact that Torp train station isn't actually at the airport, but once you realise there's a dedicated shuttle connecting the two, it all makes sense.
The shuttle and trains are well coordinated, tickets are easy to buy and there's no need to change trains along the way. For us, the whole journey was simply a five-minute shuttle from the airport, followed by around 20 minutes on the RE11 train to Tønsberg.
If you've spotted cheap flights into Oslo Torp and don't necessarily fancy heading into Oslo itself, Tønsberg is a really easy alternative for a weekend in Norway. We found the whole journey far easier than we'd expected and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
Check the timetable before travelling. The times in this guide are based on our trip in September 2026 and train times can change.
Don't head to Torp station too early. It's tiny and there aren't the facilities you'd expect at a larger station. If you have a long wait, stay at the airport.
Look for RE11 Eidsvoll when travelling to Tønsberg. Tønsberg isn't the train's final destination.
Look for RE11 Skien when travelling back to Torp.
You don't need to reserve a seat. We had no trouble getting seats and it's only around a 20-minute journey.
There's plenty of luggage space on the shuttle. The bus has large luggage racks and we also found adequate luggage storage on the train.
Have a card available. We paid for the shuttle onboard by card and wouldn't rely on cash being accepted.
If you're looking at the route online and thinking it sounds a little complicated because the train station isn't actually at the airport, don't let that put you off. This was one of those journeys that sounded far more complicated when I was researching it at home than it actually was once we arrived.
Everything is set up to make the connection as easy as possible. The shuttle picks you up directly outside the terminal, the journey to Torp station takes just five minutes and the buses are coordinated with the trains. Even when we'd just missed a train, the shuttle driver was really helpful and told us to wait comfortably inside the airport rather than heading over to the station too early.
Once you reach Torp station, there's really nothing to work out. It's a tiny station with just one track, so you simply get off the shuttle, walk onto the platform and wait for the RE11 towards Eidsvoll. Around 20 minutes after getting on the train, you're in Tønsberg.
The journey was also really cheap compared with the taxi price we'd been quoted, and we didn't need to reserve seats or worry about luggage space. From leaving the airport to arriving in Tønsberg, the whole thing felt very easy and well organised.
If you've found cheap flights into Oslo Torp, Tønsberg is definitely worth considering instead of automatically heading into Oslo. It's an easy journey for a weekend in Norway without hiring a car, and I'd happily do the exact same route again.
