A short festive escape with the bonus of visiting three countries in one trip! Switzerland, France and Germany - all easily reachable from Basel.
Here’s a fun travel quirk: EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg sits on the border and is shared between France and Switzerland.
When you land you can choose whether to exit via the French or the Swiss side of the terminal.
From Basel city centre (around 15 minutes) you can visit the Dreiländereck monument — the exact spot where Switzerland, France & Germany meet.
Nearby is the Dreiländerbrücke (Three Countries Bridge) linking Weil am Rhein (Germany) with Huningue (France).

Basel’s Old Town turns into a winter wonderland with dozens of decorated stalls, local food and artisan gifts. The markets are especially atmospheric after dark when the lights come on - perfect for a short break.
Basel → Colmar: the train takes about 43 minutes. Fares can be very reasonable (from roughly €7–€15 if you book early) . Colmar is a fairytale stop at Christmas.
Colmar → Strasbourg: direct services take around 27–35 minutes and fares are typically in the low-teens euro range.
Plan Colmar in the morning, Strasbourg for the afternoon / evening markets. you can comfortably see both in one short trip.
Freiburg (Germany): roughly an hour from Basel by train and worth a visit if you want to tick off the German market experience too.
Rough combined train travel for Colmar + Strasbourg can be under €30–€35 if you pick off-peak or advance fares. Great value for a festive mini break.
