Rovaniemi vs Levi – Which Lapland Destination Should You Choose?
One question that pops up in my inbox more than any other: Rovaniemi or Levi - which is best?
It's always a hard one to answer in a quick message, and is totally dependent on what you are looking for in terms of Lapland experience.
Both destinations offer snowy forests, reindeer, huskies and that iconic Lapland magic, but they deliver very different styles of holiday.
We get this question constantly on social media and through our blog, so here’s a clear breakdown to help you decide what is the best place to visit or stay in Lapland depending on your travel style, family needs and budget.

Quick Summary: The Main Difference Between Rovaniemi and Levi
Rovaniemi = more activities, lower prices, more budget flights, longer flight season, larger and more commercial (it is a small city).
Levi = more “storybook Lapland” feel, a compact ski-resort village, calmer atmosphere, easy for skiing and cosy winter experiences.
Great news: You can do both. The Rovaniemi to Levi distance is around 170 km (approx 2 hours by car)
Rovaniemi – Best for Choice, Budget & Convenience
1. More Activities (and Cheaper Overall)
One of the biggest advantages of Rovaniemi is sheer choice. Because it’s the largest tourism hub in Finnish Lapland, there are more suppliers offering everything- from husky rides to snowmobile safaris- which means higher competition and generally lower prices.
If you’re travelling on a budget or want to squeeze in several activities, Rovaniemi wins easily.
We even created a guide showing 11 things to do in Rovaniemi under €35
2. Better Flight Options From the UK
Rovaniemi is by far the easier and often cheaper destination to fly to.
Direct budget flights operate from many UK & Irish airports - At the time of writing you can fly from Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Liverpool, London Stansted, Shannon and Manchester, with Ryanair. Then easyJet offer flights from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Southend and Manchester.
Flight season typically runs from late October to March
More airlines = more availability, which keeps prices lower
By comparison, flights to Kittilä (for Levi) are often more expensive because there are fewer of them.
There are no direct budget flights from Scotland, Northern Ireland or Ireland to Kittilä, so travellers from those regions usually find Rovaniemi far more accessible. The only airports offering direct Kittilä flights are London Gatwick and Manchester.
3. Santa Claus Magic – But Also a More Urban Feel
Rovaniemi is the official home of Santa Claus, and Santa Claus Village is one of the biggest reasons people visit.
However, it is a city, small city at that with around 55,000 residents. But still the capital of Finnish Lapland - so it doesn’t always match the classic "remote snow-covered cabin in the wilderness" image people have of Lapland.
This is where people often feel conflicted. If you picture cabins, mountains and village squares, Rovaniemi might feel busier and more commercial.
You’ll still get snowy forests, but it’s more commercial and built-up than Levi.
If you want festive energy, convenience and activity choice, Rovaniemi is fantastic.
If you want quiet, cosy and remote, keep reading.
4. Christmas All-Year Round
Rovaniemi is the official home of Santa Claus, open 365 days a year.
If you’re travelling with children, this alone makes Rovaniemi a top choice.
But even adults tend to enjoy the experience, the decoration, post office, huskies, reindeer, restaurants and snow-covered walkways are incredibly festive.
If you're visiting Levi, most of the Santa based activities end after Christmas.
Levi – Best for Skiing & Classic Lapland Atmosphere
1. The 'Lapland Feel'
Levi feels like the Lapland people picture in their minds:
pine forests, cabins, log fires, everything walkable, and a cosy ski-resort vibe.
It’s much smaller than Rovaniemi and feels more like a traditional winter holiday village.
2. Ideal for Skiers
Levi has Finland’s largest ski resort, making it perfect for:
Families learning to ski
Mixed-ability groups
Non-skiers who still want other winter activities
People who want a chalet-style holiday
If skiing is a priority, Levi is almost always the better choice.
3. Activities Available – But Usually Pricier
You can still do all the Lapland favourites: huskies, snowmobiles, reindeer rides, but activities tend to be more expensive than in Rovaniemi. That’s simply due to fewer providers and less competition.
This also means in peak season, you may also find less last-minute availability. You need to be organised if choosing Levi, as things get booked up quickly.
4. Earlier Snow, Deeper Snow & Better Northern Lights
Another key difference travellers often overlook is geography. Levi is further north than Rovaniemi, sitting deeper inside the Arctic Circle. This gives it several big winter advantages:
Earlier snowfall: Levi usually gets consistent snow earlier in the season, often by late October or early November.
Deeper snow cover: Conditions tend to be more reliable for skiing and winter activities throughout December–March.
Slightly higher Northern Lights visibility: Because Levi is further north and has much darker skies with less light pollution, you often have a better chance of seeing the aurora, especially on clear nights.
If your main goals are a snowy landscape, guaranteed winter conditions, or maximising your chances of seeing the Northern Lights, Levi’s northern location is a strong advantage. Don't forget to read our guide on 'How to See the Northern Lights for Free in Lapland'.
So, Which Is Better: Rovaniemi or Levi?
Here’s the honest answer:
Choose Rovaniemi if you want:
✔ Cheaper overall trip
✔ Best flight options from the UK
✔ Santa Claus Village
✔ More activities
Choose Levi if you want:
✔ Skiing or snowboarding
✔ A cosy wilderness feel
✔ A quieter, less commercial environment
✔ A cabin with a fireplace and mountain views
Both Levi and Rovaniemi are incredible winter destinations, but they serve different travel styles.
Rovaniemi offers unbeatable convenience, value and variety, while Levi delivers classic Lapland magic, skiing and peaceful scenery.
If you still can’t decide, the good news is you don’t have to. The short distance between Rovaniemi and Levi makes it easy to combine both into one unforgettable Lapland adventure.
For us personally, Levi edges ahead of Rovaniemi due to the atmosphere, the scenery, the deeper snow and that cosy “Lapland” feel make it our favourite.
That said, we genuinely enjoy both destinations; they simply offer two very different styles of holiday.
But if your Lapland trip is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and your flights and budget allow for either option, then we would confidently recommend choosing Levi over Rovaniemi.
It delivers that classic, magical Lapland feeling most people dream about, and for a one-and-done trip, that extra bit of authenticity makes all the difference.
