If you're thinking about visiting Ruka and Kuusamo, you've probably realised there's far less information available than you'll find for places like Rovaniemi or Levi. That can make planning a DIY trip feel a little daunting, especially if you're trying to avoid the cost of an expensive package holiday.
The good news is that Ruka and Kuusamo offer everything many people dream of when they picture Lapland.
Unlike Rovaniemi, however, this isn't a destination built around Santa Claus. Instead, it's a fantastic choice if your priority is skiing, winter scenery, national parks and outdoor adventures.
From snow-covered forests and husky sledding to reindeer experiences, skiing, Finnish saunas and the chance to see the Northern Lights, it's one of Finland's best destinations for an independent winter holiday.
We've now planned three DIY Lapland trips ourselves, visiting both Levi and Rovaniemi without ever booking a package holiday.
By organising our own flights, accommodation and activities, we've saved ourselves thousands of pounds while still enjoying unforgettable experiences including husky sledding, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiling, ice karting, the Arctic SnowHotel and the Northern Lights.
Although we haven't visited Ruka and Kuusamo ourselves yet, we've spent years researching Finnish Lapland and working with partners in Lapland, while planning our own trips and have built this guide to help you do the same.

🚗 Do you need a car? No. Airport transfers are available and many organised activities include transport, although hiring a car gives you more flexibility to explore Kuusamo and the surrounding national parks.

💡 Top tip: Ruka and Kuusamo work best as one destination. Stay in Ruka for easy access to the ski resort and winter activities, while using Kuusamo as your gateway for flights, shopping and exploring the surrounding national parks.
Ruka and Kuusamo are located in northeastern Finland, just south of the Arctic Circle and close to the Russian border. Although they're not officially part of the Lapland region, they're often included in Lapland itineraries because they offer the same magical winter experiences, from snow-covered forests and Northern Lights to husky sledding, reindeer rides and snowmobiling.
The two destinations are only around 25 km apart and are best thought of as one holiday destination. Kuusamo is the main town and home to Kuusamo Airport, while Ruka is the nearby ski resort where most visitors choose to stay. The journey between them takes around 25 to 30 minutes by car or transfer.
Ruka is best known as Finland's most popular ski resort, with excellent slopes, winter activities and a compact pedestrian-friendly village. Kuusamo, meanwhile, provides access to supermarkets, restaurants, local services and some of Finland's most spectacular natural attractions, including Riisitunturi National Park, Oulanka National Park and the famous Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls.
Together, they make an excellent base for a DIY Lapland holiday, combining winter adventures, beautiful scenery and a quieter atmosphere than some of Finland's more well-known resorts.
Unlike destinations such as Rovaniemi and Levi, there are currently no regular direct flights from the UK or Ireland to Kuusamo Airport if you're planning a DIY trip. Instead, the easiest option is to fly to Kuusamo via Helsinki, with a short connecting flight to your final destination.
Another option is to fly directly to Rovaniemi from the UK or Ireland and continue to Ruka by public bus. The journey takes approximately 3 to 3½ hours, with services usually operating once per day during the winter season. If you choose this option, it's worth checking the bus timetable before booking your flights to make sure it connects with your arrival time.
Once you arrive in Ruka, it's perfectly possible to enjoy a holiday without a car if you're staying in the resort. The village is compact enough to explore on foot, many activities include transfers and local taxis are available if needed.
However, if you're planning to explore beyond Ruka or visit attractions such as Riisitunturi National Park, Oulanka National Park or the Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls, hiring a car will give you much more flexibility and allow you to explore the wider Kuusamo region at your own pace.
💡 Top tip: Before booking, compare both routes. Flying into Kuusamo is the quickest option, while flying into Rovaniemi can sometimes work out cheaper and gives you the opportunity to combine two of Finland's best winter destinations in one trip.

No, not necessarily.
If you're staying in Ruka Village, it's perfectly possible to enjoy a holiday without hiring a car. The resort is compact enough to explore on foot, many accommodation providers offer airport transfers, and a large number of winter activities include transport as part of the booking.
However, if you're hoping to explore more of the surrounding area, including Riisitunturi National Park, Oulanka National Park or the famous Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls, hiring a car gives you much more flexibility and allows you to travel at your own pace.
For many first-time visitors, a combination of airport transfers and organised excursions is all you need. But if you're planning a longer stay or want to discover more of the Kuusamo region independently, a hire car is well worth considering.
If you're hoping for the classic snowy Lapland experience, I'd recommend visiting between January and February. By this point, winter is usually well established, giving you the best chance of deep snow and ensuring winter activities are running as planned.
December is a magical time to visit, particularly if you're travelling with younger children. However, it's also the busiest and most expensive time of year, with accommodation and flights often selling out well in advance.
March can still be a fantastic choice if you prefer slightly longer daylight hours and quieter slopes. That said, recent winters have shown that snow conditions can become less predictable later in the season, so January and February remain my top recommendation if guaranteed snow is your priority.
If you're visiting mainly for skiing, Ruka has one of Finland's longest ski seasons, often running from October through to May, making it a great choice for winter sports enthusiasts.
I'd recommend spending 4 to 5 days in Ruka and Kuusamo. This gives you enough time to experience the area's winter activities without feeling rushed, while also allowing for the fact that Arctic weather can occasionally affect excursions.
A typical four or five-day trip gives you time to enjoy experiences such as husky sledding, snowmobiling, reindeer rides, skiing, a Northern Lights excursion and a day exploring the stunning scenery of Riisitunturi National Park or the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma. It also leaves plenty of time to relax in a traditional Finnish sauna and enjoy the slower pace that makes this part of Finland so special.
If you're mainly visiting to ski, you could easily spend a week or more in Ruka. With one of Finland's largest ski resorts and a long winter season, it's an excellent destination for anyone looking to spend several days on the slopes.
On the other hand, if you're combining Ruka with another destination such as Rovaniemi, Levi or Helsinki, then 3 nights can still be enough to experience the highlights before continuing your journey.
💡 Top tip: Don't try to pack too much into every day. One of the best parts of a Lapland holiday is simply slowing down and enjoying the snowy scenery, whether that's sitting by an open fire, wandering around the village or relaxing in a Finnish sauna after a day of adventures.
Choosing where to stay really depends on the type of trip you're planning.
For most visitors, Ruka Village is the best base. The pedestrian-friendly centre is home to restaurants, cafés, shops, ski lifts and many of the area's winter activities, making it easy to explore without needing a car. If it's your first visit, staying here puts everything within easy reach. Popular, well-rated options include Hotel Rukatonttu, Scandic Ruka and Ski-Inn RukaValley.
If you're looking for something quieter, there are also plenty of cabins and lodges in the surrounding forests and along the lakes. These offer a more traditional Lapland experience, with many featuring private saunas and the chance to enjoy the peaceful Arctic scenery away from the busier resort centre.
Kuusamo is another option, particularly if you're arriving late, hiring a car or looking for a wider choice of supermarkets and local services. Although you'll need to travel around 25 to 30 minutes to reach Ruka's ski slopes and many of the winter activities, accommodation in Kuusamo can sometimes be more affordable. Popular options include Holiday Club Kuusamon Tropiikki, Hotel Kuusamon Portti and Hostel Aurota.
💡 Top tip: If your main priority is skiing and winter activities, I'd recommend staying in Ruka Village.
If you're planning to explore the wider region, including Riisitunturi National Park, Oulanka National Park and the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma, staying in Kuusamo or hiring a car gives you a little more flexibility.
One of the biggest questions people have when planning a DIY Lapland trip is what to do about winter clothing.
If you're booking a package holiday, thermal suits and winter boots are often included. When planning your own trip, you'll usually need to organise these yourself.
The good news is that you don't necessarily need to spend hundreds of pounds on brand-new clothing. For our own trips, we've picked up excellent bargains on Vinted and eBay, while supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl often sell affordable ski clothing as part of their winter Specialbuys. If you're unlikely to use the clothing again, buying second-hand can be one of the cheapest options.
If you'd rather travel light, you can also hire winter clothing once you arrive in Lapland. Many rental companies offer thermal suits, boots and gloves for a fraction of the cost of buying everything yourself.

While you won't find attractions such as Santa Claus Village, you'll still experience everything many people associate with a Lapland holiday, from snow-covered forests and husky sledding to reindeer experiences, snowmobiling, skiing, Finnish saunas and the chance to see the Northern Lights.
It's also an excellent destination for independent travellers. With a little planning, it's easy to organise your own flights, accommodation and activities, giving you the flexibility to build a trip that suits your budget and interests without relying on an expensive package holiday.
Whether you're travelling as a family, a couple or with friends, Ruka and Kuusamo offer the chance to experience a different side of Finnish Lapland. If your priority is outdoor adventures, spectacular scenery and a more relaxed atmosphere, I think it's a destination that's often overlooked but definitely deserves a place on your shortlist.
