Looking for extreme day trips from Glasgow? Whether you're flying from Glasgow International or Glasgow Prestwick Airport, there are some fantastic opportunities to explore somewhere new without paying for overnight accommodation.
I'm a big fan of extreme day trips. We've visited destinations including Rome, Iceland, Switzerland and Disneyland Paris on whirlwind adventures, proving you don't always need a week away to enjoy an incredible travel experience.
However, finding a good extreme day trip isn't simply about choosing the cheapest flight. You need suitable departure times, a late return and practical airport transfers to make the most of your day.
For December 2026, I've found five extreme day trips from Glasgow airports, with return flights starting at just £35pp. This month's selection includes festive visits to London, Belfast and Dublin, alongside winter sunshine escapes to Tenerife and Alicante.
There are even two Sunday options, although one returns after midnight and another uses two different Glasgow airports, so it's particularly important to check the details before booking.
I've included the flight times, prices and booking links, alongside ideas for what you could do during your visit and practical tips for planning your own extreme day trip.
Extreme Day Trips from Glasgow Airports: December 2026
Here are five affordable flight deals that allow you to enjoy a day away without booking a hotel.
| Destination | Date | Return flights |
|---|---|---|
| London Stansted | Tue 1 Dec | £38pp |
| Belfast | Wed 2 Dec | £35pp |
| Dublin | Fri 4 Dec | £42pp |
| Tenerife (Prestwick) | Sun 6 Dec | £47pp |
| Alicante (two Glasgow airports) | Sun 6 Dec | £74pp |
Glasgow has two separate airports. The London, Belfast and Dublin deals use Glasgow International (GLA). Tenerife departs from Glasgow Prestwick (PIK), while the Alicante deal departs from Glasgow International and returns to Prestwick. The airports are not interchangeable, so always check your flight confirmation carefully.
Prices are per person for return flights, based on searches for two adults. Airport transfers, attractions, food and additional baggage are extra. All flight times are local to each airport.

What Is an Extreme Day Trip?
An extreme day trip involves flying to another destination, exploring for the day and returning home without booking overnight accommodation.
Most involve an early morning flight and a late evening return, although occasionally you'll arrive home after midnight.
They're a brilliant option if you want to travel more without spending lots on hotels or using too much annual leave. You could explore a European city, visit Christmas markets, spend a day in a theme park or even escape to somewhere warmer for a few hours.
We've taken plenty of these trips ourselves, and some of our favourite travel memories have come from adventures lasting less than 24 hours.
However, I wouldn't recommend choosing flights purely because they're cheap. You need to consider how long you'll actually have at your destination once you've allowed for airport transfers and check-in.
If you're new to extreme day trips, I'd recommend reading my Ultimate Guide to Extreme Day Trips, which covers flight research, luggage, airport transfers and planning your first adventure.
1. London Christmas Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow: £38pp
London is a fantastic destination for an extreme day trip from Glasgow, particularly during December when the capital is full of Christmas decorations, festive markets and special seasonal attractions.
These flights depart Glasgow International at 7.10am and arrive at London Stansted at 8.30am, with the return departure from Stansted at 8.45pm. That gives you 12 hours and 15 minutes between flights, leaving a useful amount of sightseeing time once you've travelled into central London.
I'd concentrate on the city's festive highlights rather than trying to visit lots of different attractions across London.
Start around Covent Garden, where you'll find enormous Christmas decorations, beautiful lights and plenty of shops and cafés. From there, you could explore the nearby streets of Seven Dials before heading towards Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square.
Another lovely option is visiting London's famous Christmas lights along Regent Street, Oxford Street and Carnaby Street. The illuminated angels over Regent Street are one of the city's most recognisable festive displays, and you don't need to book a tour to enjoy them.
If you'd like to visit a Christmas market, Southbank Winter Market is another option. The stalls run along the River Thames and offer festive food, drinks and gifts, with views towards some of London's famous landmarks.
For a single-day trip, I'd choose one area for most of the day and avoid booking attractions at opposite ends of London. There is plenty to enjoy in the West End without spending hours travelling on the Underground.
I've also recently updated our Christmas in London with Kids and Teens guide, which includes free things to do, Christmas lights, markets and paid attractions. It's worth a look if you're planning your day.
Tuesday 1 December 2026
Glasgow airport: Glasgow International (GLA)
London airport: London Stansted (STN)
Outbound: Glasgow 07:10 → London Stansted 08:30
Return: London Stansted 20:45 → Glasgow 22:00
Time between flights: 12 hours 15 minutes
Check London Flights Price found 21 October 2026. Subject to availability and change. Stansted Express tickets and other airport transfers are extra.Airport transfer tip: These flights use London Stansted Airport, which is connected to central London by the Stansted Express. Trains take approximately 50 minutes to reach Liverpool Street, where you can connect to the Underground.
I'd recommend booking your train tickets in advance and allowing plenty of time for the return journey. With 12 hours and 15 minutes between flights, you should still have a good amount of time to enjoy London's Christmas decorations, festive markets and shopping.
For the easiest itinerary, you could head from Liverpool Street towards the West End using the Underground, then concentrate on Covent Garden, Regent Street and the surrounding areas. Check the train timetable before travelling and work backwards from your 8.45pm return flight so you know when you need to leave central London.
2. Belfast Christmas Market Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow: £35pp
Belfast is one of the easiest destinations to visit on an extreme day trip from Glasgow, thanks to the short flight time and relatively compact city centre.
It's also a fantastic place to explore in December, particularly if you enjoy traditional Christmas markets, shopping and historic cities.
These flights arrive in Belfast at 7.45am, with the return flight leaving at 6.55pm. That gives you 11 hours and 10 minutes between flights, so you should have plenty of time to enjoy the city after allowing for airport transfers.
The main attraction is Belfast Christmas Market, which takes place in the grounds of City Hall. It runs from 14 November until 22 December 2026, making Wednesday 2 December an excellent date to visit.
The market is free to enter, with traditional wooden stalls selling gifts, decorations, food and drinks. There are usually traders offering everything from handmade crafts to international street food, making it a lovely place to spend a few hours.
I'd start with breakfast in Belfast before heading towards City Hall when the market opens at 10am.
After exploring the stalls, you could wander towards the Cathedral Quarter, one of the city's most interesting neighbourhoods. Here you'll find colourful street art, traditional pubs, restaurants and some beautiful historic buildings.
If you'd rather add an attraction, Titanic Belfast is another option, although I'd be careful not to overload the day. Personally, for a December visit, I'd concentrate on the Christmas market, city centre and a relaxed lunch.
Wednesday 2 December 2026
Departure airport: Glasgow International (GLA)
Outbound: Glasgow 07:00 → Belfast 07:45
Return: Belfast 18:55 → Glasgow 19:40
Time between flights: 11 hours 10 minutes
Check Belfast Flights Price found 21 October 2026. Subject to availability and change.Airport transfer tip: Belfast has two airports, Belfast International and Belfast City, so check which one your flight uses before travelling.
Belfast International is further from the city centre, while Belfast City has a much shorter transfer. Both have transport connections, but the difference could affect how much time you'll have at the Christmas market.
Check the official Belfast Christmas Market website for the latest visitor information.
3. Dublin Christmas Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow: £42pp
Dublin is another fantastic option for an affordable day away from Glasgow, particularly during the Christmas season.
The Irish capital has a brilliant mixture of traditional pubs, historic buildings, shopping streets and attractions, making it easy to fill a day without needing an overnight stay.
These flights depart Glasgow at 7.35am and arrive in Dublin at 8.35am, with the return departure at 8.25pm. That gives you 11 hours and 50 minutes between flights, leaving plenty of opportunity to explore once you've travelled into the city.
I'd start around Trinity College and Grafton Street, which is one of Dublin's main shopping areas. During December, the streets are decorated for Christmas and there's a lovely festive atmosphere around the shops and cafés.
From there, you could walk towards Temple Bar, one of Dublin's most recognisable neighbourhoods. The cobbled streets, colourful buildings and traditional Irish pubs make it a fantastic area to explore.
I'd definitely leave time for lunch in one of the city's pubs or restaurants, particularly if you'd like to enjoy some traditional Irish food.
If you're interested in booking an attraction, the Guinness Storehouse is a popular option, while the Book of Kells experience at Trinity College is another possibility.
However, you don't need to book expensive attractions to have a brilliant day in Dublin. There's plenty to enjoy simply by walking around the city, exploring the shops and stopping somewhere for food.
Friday 4 December 2026
Departure airport: Glasgow International (GLA)
Outbound: Glasgow 07:35 → Dublin 08:35
Return: Dublin 20:25 → Glasgow 21:25
Time between flights: 11 hours 50 minutes
Check Dublin Flights Price found 21 October 2026. Subject to availability and change.Airport transfer tip: Dublin Airport is approximately 12km from the city centre and is connected by several airport bus services.
Journey times depend on traffic and which part of Dublin you're visiting, so I'd work out your return journey before travelling.
With the flight departing at 8.25pm, you'll still have time for an early evening meal, but don't leave your airport transfer until the last minute.
4. Tenerife Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow Prestwick: £47pp
Now this is a slightly unusual one! How about flying all the way to Tenerife for a few hours of December sunshine before returning home?
At just £47pp return, it's a surprisingly affordable option for visiting the Canary Islands without booking overnight accommodation.
However, this is definitely an extreme day trip in every sense of the word. It's a long travel day, and you need to be comfortable with the flight times and airport transfers before booking.
These flights depart Glasgow Prestwick at 6.05am on Sunday 6 December, arriving in Tenerife at 10.45am. The return flight leaves Tenerife at 8.15pm and lands back at Prestwick at 12.55am on Monday morning.
That gives you 9 hours and 30 minutes between flights, which could allow several hours enjoying the island after accounting for airport transfers.
If your flight uses Tenerife South Airport, I'd recommend keeping the day simple and heading towards one of the resorts on the south coast, such as Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas.
These areas are known for their beaches, promenades, restaurants and generally pleasant winter weather. Although December isn't guaranteed to be sunny, temperatures are often much warmer than Scotland, making it a lovely destination for a winter escape.
Personally, I wouldn't attempt to visit Mount Teide, explore the north of the island or book a full-day excursion on an extreme day trip with these timings.
Instead, I'd head straight to the coast, enjoy a relaxed lunch, spend a few hours beside the sea and perhaps stop for a drink before returning to the airport.
It's a fun option for someone who loves the idea of doing something completely different on a Sunday, but I'd only recommend it if you're happy with a very long day and a late arrival back in Scotland.
Sunday 6 December 2026
Departure and return airport: Glasgow Prestwick (PIK)
Outbound: Prestwick 06:05 → Tenerife 10:45
Return: Tenerife 20:15 → Prestwick 00:55 on Monday 7 December
Time between flights: 9 hours 30 minutes
Check Tenerife Flights Price found 21 October 2026. Subject to availability and change. Flight arrives back after midnight. These flights depart from Glasgow Prestwick, not Glasgow International. You'll also land back at 00:55 on Monday 7 December, so you'll need to consider work commitments the following day and how you're getting home from the airport.
Normal Sunday train services may start too late for a 06:05 departure. You'll need to check the timetable and may have to arrange an alternative way to reach the airport, such as driving, parking, a lift or a pre-booked taxi. Don't assume public transport will be available after the return flight either.
Airport transfer tip: Tenerife has two airports, North and South, so check which airport your flights use before booking.
If you're flying into Tenerife South, the resorts of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Américas are relatively convenient options. I'd check transport times and costs carefully and avoid anything that involves travelling across the island.
5. Alicante Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow: £74pp
Alicante is another lovely option if you'd prefer a little December sunshine over Christmas markets.
Located on Spain's Costa Blanca, Alicante has a beautiful waterfront, historic Old Town, colourful streets and plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Spanish tapas.
This particular flight combination is interesting because it maximises your time in Alicante, with a morning arrival and late evening departure.
However, there's one very important detail: the outbound flight departs Glasgow International, but the return flight lands at Glasgow Prestwick.
That's absolutely fine if you've planned around it, but it could be a problem if you leave your car at the departure airport or assume both flights operate from the same place.
The outbound flight leaves Glasgow International at 6.15am and arrives in Alicante at 10.30am. Your return flight departs Alicante at 9.25pm, landing at Glasgow Prestwick at 11.35pm.
That gives you 10 hours and 55 minutes between flights, leaving a good amount of time to enjoy Alicante once you've allowed for airport transfers.
I'd begin by exploring the Old Town, particularly the Santa Cruz neighbourhood. This beautiful area is known for its colourful buildings, narrow streets and views towards Santa Bárbara Castle.
The castle itself is one of Alicante's main attractions, standing high above the city with panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline.
Another lovely area is the Explanada de España, a palm-lined promenade running beside the marina. It's perfect for a relaxed walk, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafés nearby.
I'd definitely leave time for a Spanish lunch, perhaps followed by a walk along Postiguet Beach or the waterfront.
For me, Alicante is one of those destinations where you don't need an expensive itinerary. A wander through the historic streets, a relaxed meal and a few hours enjoying the coastal atmosphere can make a fantastic day out.
And because this deal is on a Sunday, you wouldn't need annual leave if you normally work Monday to Friday.
Sunday 6 December 2026
Outbound: Glasgow International (GLA) 06:15 → Alicante 10:30
Return: Alicante 21:25 → Glasgow Prestwick (PIK) 23:35
Time between flights: 10 hours 55 minutes
Check Alicante Flights Price found 21 October 2026. Subject to availability and change. Outbound and return Glasgow airports are different. This itinerary departs from Glasgow International (GLA) but returns to Glasgow Prestwick (PIK). These are two completely separate airports, so don't book parking at Glasgow International without arranging how you'll get back there.
The return flight is scheduled to land at Prestwick at 23:35 on Sunday. This is very late for public transport, particularly on a Sunday evening, so check your onward journey carefully before booking.
Alicante airport transfer tip: The C6 airport bus connects Alicante Airport with the city centre and waterfront, making it a relatively convenient destination for a short visit.
I'd check the current bus timetable and allow plenty of time for the journey back to Alicante Airport before your 9.25pm return flight.
More Extreme Day Trips from Edinburgh and Manchester Airports
Glasgow has some excellent options for extreme day trips, but there may be dates when suitable same-day return flights are difficult to find.
If you're flexible about which airport you use, it's definitely worth checking Edinburgh or Manchester, as they can offer a wider selection of destinations and sometimes better flight times.
Extreme Day Trips from Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh is a fantastic alternative, particularly for European city breaks and Christmas markets.
For December 2026, I've found five day trip options, including Madrid, Rome, Belfast, Dublin and Copenhagen, with return flights starting at £53pp.
There are also several weekend departures, which could be useful if you don't want to take annual leave.

Remember to factor in the additional transport, parking and time involved rather than comparing flight prices alone.
How to Plan an Extreme Day Trip from Glasgow
Glasgow is a brilliant starting point for short adventures, but you'll need to consider a few things before booking, particularly because the area has two different airports.
Glasgow International vs Glasgow Prestwick
Glasgow International Airport (GLA) is located west of Glasgow city centre, near Paisley. It's the main airport used for many domestic flights and a wide selection of European routes.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) is further south, near Ayr, and is a completely separate airport.
Prestwick has its own railway station on the Glasgow Central to Ayr line, with a covered walkway linking the platforms to the airport terminal. The journey from Glasgow Central generally takes around 40–45 minutes.
However, rail services have different operating hours on Sundays, and very early departures or late-night arrivals can fall outside normal public transport times.
That's particularly important for the Tenerife and Alicante deals featured in this article.
If you're booking flights that use both airports, plan your journey home before paying, especially if you're leaving a car at one of them.
Getting to Glasgow International Airport
Glasgow International is connected to the city centre by airport buses, taxis and road links.
The Glasgow Airport Express bus provides a useful connection to the city, although I'd always check the current timetable before booking early morning flights.
For departures around 6am or 7am, you may need to leave home very early. Remember to allow enough time for airport check-in, security and boarding.
Choose Flights with the Right Timings
Whenever I'm searching for extreme day trips, I start by looking at the flight schedule rather than choosing a destination first.
Ideally, I want an early morning arrival and a late evening departure. However, the amount of time you need depends on the destination and how long it takes to travel from the airport into the city centre.
For example, Dublin and Belfast have relatively short flight times, while Tenerife is a much longer journey but gives you the opportunity to enjoy winter sunshine.
I'd always work backwards from your return flight, checking when you need to be back at the airport and planning your sightseeing around the time you'll realistically have available.
Check Your Airport Transfers Before Booking
One of the biggest mistakes people make when planning extreme day trips is booking cheap flights without checking how long it takes to get from the airport to the destination they actually want to visit.
Some airports are only a short journey from the centre, while others involve longer transfers or several transport connections.
London Stansted is a good example. Although the Stansted Express takes around 50 minutes to Liverpool Street, you'll still need to allow time for the onward Underground journey to attractions in central London and the return trip to the airport.
Tenerife is another destination where choosing the correct airport matters, especially when you're only visiting for a few hours.
Travel with an Underseat Backpack
One of the easiest ways to keep extreme day trips affordable is to travel with a small underseat backpack rather than paying for additional baggage.
For a single day, you really don't need much. I'd normally pack my travel documents, phone, purse, power bank, medication and a few essentials.
If you're heading to Christmas markets in London, Belfast or Dublin, remember to wear warm clothes and comfortable footwear.
For Tenerife or Alicante, check the weather forecast before travelling and pack suitable layers. Even in December, it's possible to enjoy pleasant weather, but sunshine isn't guaranteed.
Always check the airline's baggage allowance before travelling because permitted underseat bag dimensions can vary.
Check Passport Requirements and Travel Insurance
Make sure you have the correct travel documents for your destination and check the current entry requirements before booking.
Requirements depend on your nationality and immigration status, and different rules apply for domestic UK flights, the Republic of Ireland and Spain.
I'd also recommend suitable travel insurance for international trips, even if you're only travelling for the day.
Flight cancellations, delays or missed connections can happen, and it's worth understanding what your policy covers if you unexpectedly need to stay overnight.
Don't Try to Fit Too Much Into One Day
One thing I've learned from taking extreme day trips is that you don't need to see everything to have a fantastic experience.
Sometimes spending a few hours exploring a city, enjoying a lovely meal and visiting one attraction is far more enjoyable than trying to cram an entire week's sightseeing into a single day.
I'd recommend choosing one main experience and leaving the rest of your itinerary flexible.
For Christmas market trips, you can usually enjoy the atmosphere without booking lots of activities. For sunshine destinations, a relaxed beach afternoon can be enough to make the trip worthwhile.
