If you're planning a trip to Finnish Lapland, one of the biggest decisions you'll make is whether to stay in Rovaniemi or Levi.
It's easily the question we're asked most often, whether that's in our Facebook comments, Instagram messages or emails from readers planning their first Lapland adventure.
Having now visited both destinations across three separate trips, I completely understand why it's such a difficult decision.
On paper they seem very similar. Both offer snowy forests, reindeer, husky safaris, Northern Lights and unforgettable winter experiences.
In reality though, they feel completely different.
Rovaniemi is larger, easier to reach and usually better value, while Levi feels more like the storybook Lapland most people imagine.
In this guide, I'll compare the two based on our own experiences to help you decide which destination is the better fit for your trip.

The good news is that you don't have to choose. Rovaniemi and Levi are only around 170km apart, with the journey taking approximately two hours by car, making it easy to visit both during the same trip.
One of Rovaniemi's biggest advantages is simply the amount of choice available.
As the largest tourist destination in Finnish Lapland, there are dozens of companies offering everything from husky safaris and snowmobile tours to Northern Lights excursions and reindeer experiences. That competition helps keep prices lower and gives you far more flexibility when planning your itinerary.
We noticed this ourselves during our visits. Whether we were comparing activity providers, looking for restaurants or choosing where to stay, there always seemed to be plenty of options available.
If you're hoping to fit lots of different experiences into your trip, Rovaniemi is usually the better choice. There's a wider range of activities to suit different budgets, and it's often easier to find availability, particularly outside the busiest Christmas period.

Rovaniemi is by far the easiest Lapland destination to reach from the UK and, in many cases, it's also the cheapest.
One of the biggest reasons is the number of direct flights available. During the winter season, both Ryanair and easyJet operate services from multiple UK and Irish airports, giving travellers far more choice when it comes to finding affordable fares.
At the time of writing, Ryanair flies direct to Rovaniemi from Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Liverpool, London Stansted, Manchester and Shannon, while easyJet offers flights from Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Southend and Manchester.
With more airlines and more departure airports competing for passengers, it's often easier to find a bargain, particularly if you're flexible with your travel dates.
By comparison, Levi is served by Kittilä Airport, which has far fewer direct flights from the UK.
At the moment, the only direct budget routes are from London Gatwick and Manchester, so travellers from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Ireland will usually find Rovaniemi much more convenient.

Rovaniemi is the official home of Santa Claus, and for many people that's the biggest reason to visit.
Santa Claus Village is open all year round and brings together many of Lapland's most popular experiences in one place. You can meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle, visit Santa's Main Post Office, enjoy reindeer and husky experiences, browse the souvenir shops and soak up the festive atmosphere, all within easy walking distance.
We've visited Santa Claus Village several times and genuinely enjoy it every time. Even on our adults-only trip, we still found ourselves wandering through the village, sending postcards home and crossing the Arctic Circle again. It's one of those places that never really loses its magic.
However, it's worth remembering that Rovaniemi is also a city. While it's relatively small, with around 55,000 residents, it's still the capital of Finnish Lapland. If your idea of Lapland is a tiny snow-covered village surrounded by forests and mountains, Rovaniemi might feel busier and more commercial than you were expecting.
That's not necessarily a bad thing.
The city offers far more restaurants, supermarkets, shops and accommodation than Levi, making it incredibly convenient, especially for first-time visitors and families.
But if you're dreaming of cosy log cabins, quiet snowy streets and a traditional ski village atmosphere, Levi probably feels closer to the picture you've built up in your mind.
For us, this is one of the biggest differences between the two destinations. Rovaniemi offers convenience and choice, while Levi offers atmosphere.
One of the biggest advantages Rovaniemi has over Levi is that Christmas never really ends.
As the official hometown of Santa Claus, Santa Claus Village is open 365 days a year. Whether you visit in November, February or even the middle of summer, you'll still be able to meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle, visit Santa's Main Post Office and enjoy the festive atmosphere that makes Rovaniemi so famous.
For families with younger children, that's a huge advantage.
Even if your trip isn't centred entirely around Santa, it's difficult not to get caught up in the excitement. Between the reindeer, huskies, Christmas music and snow-covered walkways, the whole village feels magical throughout the winter season.
We've visited Santa Claus Village on more than one trip and have always found ourselves spending longer there than we'd planned. It's one of those places that's enjoyable for adults just as much as children, especially if it's your first visit to Lapland.
Levi does have opportunities to meet Santa during the festive season, but once Christmas has passed, many of those experiences come to an end. That's why, if meeting Santa is high on your wish list, Rovaniemi is the clear winner.
If visiting Santa Claus Village is one of the main reasons you're travelling to Lapland, I'd choose Rovaniemi every time.
If you've always pictured Lapland as snow-covered log cabins, pine forests, cosy cafés and a small village where everything is within walking distance, Levi is probably the destination you've been imagining.
The first time we arrived, it immediately felt like the Lapland we'd pictured before visiting Finland.
Compared with Rovaniemi, Levi has a much smaller, more intimate feel. The village is centred around the ski slopes, with restaurants, cafés, shops and accommodation all within easy walking distance. Rather than feeling like a city with attractions, it feels like a traditional winter resort where everything revolves around the outdoors.
We also found it much quieter. Even during the busy winter season, it never felt particularly hectic once you stepped away from the centre. Surrounded by forests and fells, it has a peaceful atmosphere that's difficult to describe until you've experienced it yourself.
For us, this is where Levi really stands out.
While Rovaniemi offers more convenience and choice, Levi captures that classic storybook image of Lapland that so many people dream about. If you're looking for a cosy winter escape rather than a city break with Christmas attractions, Levi is hard to beat.
If skiing or snowboarding is one of the main reasons you're visiting Lapland, Levi is the clear choice.
Home to Finland's largest ski resort, it offers slopes for complete beginners through to experienced skiers, along with modern lifts, equipment hire and ski schools. Whether you're planning your very first lesson or looking to spend several days on the slopes, Levi has everything you need within easy reach.
What I particularly like is that you don't have to be a skier to enjoy the atmosphere. During our visit, it was lovely watching people coming down the illuminated slopes while we wandered around the village or relaxed with a hot drink. It gives Levi a real alpine feel that's quite different from Rovaniemi.
It's also a great option for mixed groups. Some people can spend the day skiing while others head off on a husky safari, visit a spa or simply enjoy the cafés and shops before meeting up again later.
If skiing is high on your priority list, Levi is undoubtedly the better destination. It's one of the things that gives the village its unique atmosphere and sets it apart from anywhere else in Finnish Lapland.
You'll still find all of Lapland's classic experiences in Levi.
Husky safaris, reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile tours, Northern Lights excursions and horse trekking are all available, so you certainly won't feel like you're missing out by choosing Levi.
The main difference is usually the price.
Because Levi is a smaller resort with fewer activity providers, there's less competition than in Rovaniemi. As a result, we often found similar experiences costing a little more, particularly during the busiest weeks of the winter season.
Availability can also become an issue.
Popular excursions often sell out well in advance, especially over Christmas and during the February half-term holidays. If you're planning to visit Levi at a busy time, I'd definitely recommend booking your must-do activities before you travel rather than hoping to arrange them once you arrive.
That said, the smaller number of providers can also make the experience feel a little more personal. Some of our favourite activities across all three trips, including our reindeer sleigh ride at Lappin Saaga and our unforgettable evening at Polarman's Camp, took place in Levi.
So while you may pay slightly more, the quality of the experiences certainly doesn't disappoint.
One of the biggest advantages Levi has over Rovaniemi is its location.
Sitting further north, deeper inside the Arctic Circle, Levi generally enjoys a longer and more reliable winter season. If you're travelling at the beginning or end of the season, this can make a noticeable difference.
Snow usually arrives earlier than it does in Rovaniemi, often by late October or early November, and the snow cover tends to remain deeper throughout the winter. That's one of the reasons Levi has become such a popular destination for skiers and winter sports enthusiasts.
Being further north also gives Levi a slight advantage when it comes to the Northern Lights.
While there's never a guarantee you'll see the aurora anywhere in Lapland, Levi's darker skies and lower levels of light pollution can improve your chances when conditions are right. We've been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights in Levi ourselves, and watching them dance across the sky is something we'll never forget.
Of course, it's worth remembering that the weather will always have the final say. Clear skies are far more important than choosing one destination over another, so whichever resort you decide on, I'd recommend downloading an aurora forecast app and keeping an eye on the conditions during your trip.
If seeing deep snow and maximising your chances of spotting the Northern Lights are high on your wish list, Levi just has the edge.
The honest answer is that neither destination is better. They simply offer different types of Lapland holidays.
If you're looking for the best value, the widest choice of activities and the easiest destination to reach from the UK, I'd recommend Rovaniemi.
It's ideal for first-time visitors, families with younger children and anyone whose trip revolves around Santa Claus Village. With more direct flights, a wider choice of accommodation and generally lower activity prices, it's often the easier destination to plan on a budget.
On the other hand, if your dream of Lapland involves snow-covered cabins, peaceful forests, cosy cafés and a traditional winter village atmosphere, Levi is hard to beat.
The scenery feels more remote, the snow is often deeper and the village has that classic storybook feel that many people imagine before they visit Lapland for the first time.

If you're still struggling to decide, there's another option.
Because the two destinations are only around 170km apart, it's perfectly possible to visit both on the same holiday. We've met plenty of travellers who fly into one airport, spend a few days exploring each destination and then fly home from the other.
Having now visited both, we'd happily return to either.
However, if someone asked us where they should go for a once-in-a-lifetime Lapland trip, we'd probably recommend Levi.
For us, it captures everything we'd imagined Lapland would be before our first visit. The snowy forests, cosy village atmosphere, deeper snow and peaceful surroundings create the magical Arctic experience we'd always dreamed about.
That doesn't take anything away from Rovaniemi, which we also love and would recommend without hesitation, particularly for families visiting Santa Claus Village or anyone planning a DIY trip on a budget.
The truth is, whichever destination you choose, you're going to experience everything that makes Lapland so special. It simply comes down to whether you value convenience and choice, or atmosphere and scenery a little more.
