Planning a DIY Lapland trip for winter 2026 and wondering how to get to Lapland from the UK and which airports you can actually fly from? You’re not alone! This is one of the most searched questions every year as families start planning festive and winter Arctic breaks.
As a DIY Lapland Specialist, I’ve planned countless independent trips (not packages), and built this guide to clearly explain where you can fly from in the UK to Lapland, which destinations have direct flights, and how to reach the rest of Lapland if you don’t.
This guide focuses on budget-friendly DIY flights, not expensive Santa day trips or package-only charters.
Yes – but only to certain destinations, and usually seasonally.
For winter 2026, budget DIY flights operate only to: - Rovaniemi and Levi (Kittilä Airport)
If you’re heading to other places in Lapland – such as Ruka, Ylläs, Saariselkä or Inari you’ll need to
travel onward by car, bus or train after landing.
👉 If you’re deciding between the two main entry points, read Rovaniemi vs Levi to help you choose.
Direct UK to Lapland flights: around 3.5 – 4 hours
UK to Helsinki: around 3 hours
Helsinki to Lapland (internal flight): 1–1.5 hours
Travelling via Helsinki is often cheaper and opens up more Lapland destinations – especially if you’re not
tied to school holiday dates.
Below are the confirmed DIY budget flight routes for winter 2026.
These are scheduled airline
services (not expensive Santa-only charters) and are the routes most people should be focusing on when planning Lapland independently.
From the UK: - Belfast - Birmingham - Bristol - London Gatwick - London Luton - London Southend - Edinburgh - Manchester

From Europe: - Paris Beauvais - Milan Bergamo - Brussels Charleroi

If you can’t find affordable direct flights to Lapland, Helsinki is often the cheapest and most flexible
option, especially outside peak Christmas weeks.
You can then continue north by: - Internal flight - Or the Santa Claus Express sleeper train.
Rovaniemi is the most accessible Lapland destination and ideal for first-timers.
You can reach Rovaniemi by: -
1) Direct flights from the UK (seasonal)
2) Flying UK → Helsinki →Rovaniemi

Flying to Helsinki opens up Lapland to far more travellers and is often significantly cheaper. A popular option is to take the Santa Claus Express - an overnight train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. Kemi and Kolari, with private sleeper cabins - perfect for families.
It’s a brilliant alternative to flying internally and a memorable part of the journey itself.

flexibly.
Typical DIY costs: -
Flights: from £80–£250 return (we've flown for as low as £50 return!)
Accommodation: from £60–£150 per night - peak times this can be more, in particular Christmas week.
Activities: optional – many winter experiences are free or low-cost
Booking flights separately and travelling independently is almost always cheaper than packaged Santa trips.

One of the most searched questions is how to find cheap flights to Lapland – and flexibility is key.
I always use Skyscanner because: - You can search by the whole month - It shows the cheapest date combinations - It compares all airlines and routes in one place. This is especially useful for Lapland, where prices can vary hugely depending on the exact day you fly.
