If you're wondering when the best time to visit Levi is, the answer really depends on what you want from your trip.
Some people dream of a magical Christmas surrounded by snow-covered trees and festive lights. Others are hoping to see the Northern Lights, spend their days skiing or enjoy winter activities like reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobiling and ice karting. If you're looking for inspiration, I've rounded up my favourite experiences in my 25 Things to Do in Levi guide.
The good news is that Levi is one of the most reliable destinations in Finnish Lapland for snow, with a long winter season and plenty to do throughout the colder months. However, no two winters are exactly the same. Some years the snow arrives early and stays well into spring, while in others it comes later or melts much sooner than expected.
We visited Levi in late November after booking our trip just four weeks before departure. By waiting until snow had already arrived, we managed to enjoy a winter wonderland before the Christmas crowds and without paying peak-season prices.
However, I wouldn't necessarily recommend booking November months in advance if snow is your priority.

💡 Top tip: Don't book November expecting guaranteed snow months in advance. Snowfall varies from year to year, so I'd keep an eye on the weather and snow conditions before booking if you're hoping for an early winter trip.

If you're looking for the classic Lapland experience, I'd recommend visiting between late November and March. This is when you're most likely to find snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, winter activities and the magical atmosphere that Levi is famous for.
We visited from 26th to 30th November, booking our trip only around four weeks before departure. Rather than booking months in advance and hoping for snow, we kept an eye on the weather forecasts and local webcams until we could see that winter had properly arrived. Local residents told us it was already the second snowfall of the season and were confident it was there to stay, so we grabbed a bargain and booked.
For us, it worked perfectly. The village looked like a winter wonderland, the Christmas lights were up, the ski slopes were open and every activity we wanted to do was running as planned. We also avoided the busiest Christmas crowds and paid much less than we would have done a few weeks later.
That said, I wouldn't automatically recommend booking a November trip months in advance if snow is your priority. Every winter is different. Some years the first lasting snowfall arrives later than expected, while in other years the snow disappears much earlier. In fact, this year many parts of Lapland had very little snow left by March.
If you're booking well in advance and want the best chance of guaranteed snow, I'd lean towards December, January or February. However, if you're flexible and happy to keep an eye on conditions, late November can offer excellent value while still delivering the magical Lapland experience many people are looking for.
Late November can be one of the best times to visit Levi if you're flexible with your booking dates. We travelled during the last week of November after checking that snow had already arrived, and it turned out to be the perfect decision.
The Christmas lights were up, the ski slopes were open and every activity we wanted to do was running, including reindeer sleigh rides, Arcandia, Northern Lights tours and mini snowmobiling. Flights and accommodation were also much cheaper than the peak Christmas period.
That said, snowfall varies every year, so I wouldn't recommend booking November months in advance if snow is your priority. Instead, keep an eye on the weather forecasts and local webcams before committing.
December is when Levi feels at its most magical. The village is beautifully decorated for Christmas, festive events are in full swing and you'll find some of the best conditions for a traditional Lapland holiday.
It's also one of the busiest and most expensive times to visit, especially during the school holidays. If your dates are flexible, travelling in early December rather than the weeks immediately before Christmas can often save you money while still giving you the same festive atmosphere.
January is usually one of the coldest months of the year, but it's also one of the best for reliable snow. The Christmas crowds have disappeared, making it a quieter time to enjoy the ski slopes, winter activities and Northern Lights excursions.
If you're looking for guaranteed winter conditions and don't mind the colder temperatures, January is an excellent choice.
February is another fantastic month to visit Levi. Snow conditions are normally excellent, daylight hours are becoming slightly longer and almost every winter activity is available.
It's particularly popular with families travelling during the February half-term holidays, so expect prices to rise during those weeks.
Temperatures regularly fall well below freezing, so having the right clothing makes a huge difference. My What to Wear in Lapland guide covers everything we packed after several winter trips.
March offers a great balance of longer daylight hours and winter conditions. The extra daylight gives you more time to enjoy skiing and outdoor activities, while evenings are still dark enough for Northern Lights hunting.
However, weather patterns can vary from year to year. Some winters still have deep snow throughout March, while others see milder temperatures arrive much earlier.
April is ideal if skiing is your main priority, with spring sunshine often creating fantastic conditions on the slopes. Temperatures are usually much milder than earlier in the winter, making it more comfortable for spending long days outdoors.
Towards the end of the month, some winter activities begin to finish as the snow starts to melt.
Levi looks completely different during the summer months. Instead of snow, you'll find green forests, hiking trails, mountain biking routes and the Midnight Sun.
Although you won't experience the traditional winter activities that Lapland is famous for, it's a great time to visit if you enjoy outdoor adventures and quieter surroundings.
Autumn brings colourful forests, cooler temperatures and the return of darker evenings, making it one of the first opportunities to see the Northern Lights after summer.
Snow is still unlikely during most of this period, but if your main goal is hiking, photography or experiencing Lapland without the winter crowds, autumn can be a beautiful time to visit.

We spent five days exploring Levi, enjoying everything from reindeer sleigh rides and Arcandia to mini snowmobiling, Northern Lights hunting and simply wandering around the village.

One of the biggest advantages was the price. By travelling before the busiest Christmas period, we managed to book return flights from Manchester for just £52 per person, helping us put together a five-day DIY Lapland holiday for under £500 per person.
However, I'd use exactly the same approach. Rather than booking many months in advance and hoping for snow, I'd wait until winter had properly arrived before committing. Every year is different, and while we were lucky enough to enjoy fantastic conditions, there's never a guarantee that late November will look the same from one winter to the next.
For us, late November offered the perfect balance of snow, festive atmosphere and affordability. It's the month we'd happily choose again, provided we could wait until snow conditions looked reliable before booking.
