Getting from Bergen Airport to the city centre is really straightforward, and it doesn't need to cost much either.
When I visited Bergen, I took the Bybanen light rail from Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO) to Byparken in the centre of Bergen. The journey took around 45 minutes and cost just 51 NOK, which was around £4 at the time.
There are quicker options, including the airport bus and taxis, but personally, if I have the choice between a metro or light rail and a bus, I'll nearly always choose the train option. I find it easier, especially when I'm somewhere new.
In this guide, I'll go through all the main ways to get from Bergen Airport to Bergen city centre, including the Bybanen, Flybussen airport bus, taxis and private transfers.

This is the option I used and the one I'd personally choose again.
The Bergen Light Rail, known as the Bybanen, runs directly from Bergen Airport into the city centre. I took Line 1 from Bergen Lufthavn to Byparken, which is basically one end of the line to the other, so there's no need to change anywhere.
Finding the Bybanen at Bergen Airport is really easy.
Once you come out of the terminal building, you'll see escalators taking you downstairs to the station. There's also a lift if you have luggage, a pushchair or would just rather avoid the escalators.
The station itself is very small, with just two platforms, so you really can't get lost. I'll include a photo so you know exactly what you're looking for.
There are ticket machines at the station and I simply bought my ticket there before boarding.
One thing that confused me slightly at first is that you don't receive a paper ticket. If you pay by bank card at the machine, your ticket is linked to the card you used to pay. If there's a ticket inspection, that card acts as proof that you've bought a ticket.
A single Zone A ticket is valid for 60 minutes, which is enough for the full journey from Bergen Airport to the city centre. Just make sure you buy your ticket before boarding, as you can't buy one once you're on the Bybanen.
I paid 51 NOK, which was £3.97 at the time of my trip.
The Bybanen runs frequently throughout the day, so you don't really need to plan your arrival around a particular departure.
On weekdays, Line 1 currently runs as often as every 5 minutes during the busiest parts of the day, around every 7–8 minutes at other times, and every 10–15 minutes later in the evening. Timetables vary at weekends and on public holidays, so it's worth checking Skyss for the exact times for your journey.
When I arrived, I simply bought my ticket and waited for the next one. There was no need to rush through the airport trying to catch a particular service.
From Bergen Lufthavn, I stayed on Line 1 all the way to Byparken, the final stop.
The journey takes around 45 minutes, so it's not the quickest way to get into Bergen, but I found it really easy. The Bybanen runs frequently and there was plenty of room on board for luggage.
Personally, if I've got the choice between a metro/train or bus from an airport, I'll nearly always choose the rail option. I just find it easier when I'm somewhere new.
My flight landed at around 7.30pm and I was in my accommodation by 9pm. I was staying at Ole Bull Hotel & Apartments, which was only around a four-minute walk from Byparken, so it worked perfectly for me.
For less than £4, I thought it was a brilliant way to get from Bergen Airport into the city centre.
The other main public transport option from Bergen Airport is the Flybussen airport bus.
It's quicker than the Bybanen, taking around 30 minutes to reach Bergen city centre, depending on traffic and where you get off.
Tickets currently start from 189 NOK for an adult when bought online, so it is quite a bit more expensive than the Bybanen at 51 NOK.
The advantage is that the bus makes several stops through central Bergen, including Bergen Bus Station, Festplassen and Bryggen. Depending on where you're staying, one of these might actually be closer to your hotel than Byparken.
You can buy your ticket online before travelling, through the Flybussen app or on board the bus. If you know you're going to use it, it's worth buying online as this is usually the cheapest option.
I didn't use the Flybussen myself. My accommodation was only around a four-minute walk from Byparken, so paying considerably more to save around 15 minutes didn't really make sense for me.
However, I'd check where your hotel is before deciding. If the bus stops right outside or much closer to where you're staying, the extra cost might be worth it, particularly if you've got luggage with you.
If you'd rather go straight from Bergen Airport to your accommodation, you can take a taxi or book a private transfer in advance.
A taxi is the quickest option, with the journey into central Bergen taking around 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic and exactly where you're staying.
When I was planning my trip, I found taxis were around £44 (580 NOK) one way, although the price can vary depending on the time of day, taxi company and your destination.
Travelling solo, it wasn't worth it for me when I could get the Bybanen for less than £4. However, if you're travelling as a family or group, it's worth comparing the total cost rather than looking at the price per person. Split between four people, for example, the difference isn't quite as big.
You can also pre-book a private transfer before you travel. This will usually cost more than public transport, but you'll have someone waiting for you when you arrive and you'll be taken directly to your accommodation.
I'd consider a taxi or private transfer if I was arriving very late, travelling with young children, had lots of luggage or was staying somewhere that wasn't convenient for the Bybanen.
For most people staying in central Bergen though, I'd still check how close your accommodation is to a Bybanen stop before paying for a taxi.
For me, the Bybanen is the best option and it's what I'd use again.
At 51 NOK, it was considerably cheaper than the airport bus or a taxi, and I found the whole journey really easy. The station is directly outside the terminal, services are frequent, there's plenty of space for luggage and you don't need to change anywhere.
The only real downside is the journey time. It takes around 45 minutes compared with around 30 minutes on the Flybussen or roughly 20 minutes by taxi.
For me, an extra 15–25 minutes wasn't worth paying considerably more, particularly as Byparken was only a four-minute walk from my accommodation.
That said, I'd choose based on where you're staying and who you're travelling with. Flybussen could make more sense if one of its stops is closer to your hotel, while a taxi becomes much more appealing if there are four of you splitting the fare or you're travelling with young children and lots of luggage.
If you're travelling solo or as a couple and staying centrally, I'd definitely check the Bybanen first.
Bergen Airport Flesland is around 18km from Bergen city centre. Journey times vary depending on how you travel, from around 20 minutes by taxi to approximately 45 minutes on the Bybanen.
There isn't a conventional train, but Bybanen Line 1 runs directly from Bergen Airport to Byparken in the city centre.
It's basically one end of the line to the other, so there are no changes to worry about.
The Bybanen is the cheapest option. A Zone A adult ticket currently costs 51 NOK and covers the full journey from Bergen Lufthavn to Byparken.

If you're flying into Bergen, getting from the airport into the city really is one of the easiest parts of the trip. I used the Bybanen and would happily use it again, but with the bus and taxi options too, there's something to suit most budgets and arrival times.
